So I have 5,5 mill c-bills I want to spend. Those of you with blackjacks, are they any good? Worth buying? Is dual ac5 and 4 medium lasers viable?
Are they good with xl engines?

EDIT: Has anyone tried a build like this?

I didn't buy any BJ nor do I have any plan to do so, because my mechwarrior instinct tells me that BJ is a major lackluster, and you can't possibly make it actually viable in combat unless you run it with an XL.

It's basically a budget Jagermech. And I own all Jagermechs.

Dual AC/5 and 4 meds isn't viable unless you want to sacrifice a ton of armor. Dual AC/5 and JJs, however, is viable and fun to run.

Bought a laser one, and am thinking of selling it already. The laser one just seems to be an inferior cicada/jenner when you run an xl, and when you run a standard an inferior hunchback. Not sure how the ballistics ones are though.

Nope, it's not worth it at all. I made the mistake and bought one.

The BlackJack is just a lighter Jagermech. It's the same size, same speed, and far less weapons. Funnily, it has more armor, but it's so close to the armor-limit, that modifying it won't help you much. You can of course take an xxl-engine, but you might also just put one in a Jagermech.

The 1X with it's 8 laser might be interesting, then again, it has few engine-heat sinks, so it will overheat in no time, as well as still being as slow as every heavy.

You might of course change the whole loadout, weapons and armor, but then why choosing a BJ at all? It's really as big as a jagermech, and even that one is rather large and very broad.

Meh, just a jumpy Jagermech. I think it looks nicer than the Jagermech but its too light to do much with ballistics.

I've bought 3... and made builds for they all around XL's. Only able to field test the BJ-1 so far where I put in a 200XL, Guass and 4ML, and must say easy 500dmg a game. Treat the Blackjack much like the Hunchback, it's a cheerleader, not a player... it really amazingly supports heavier and lighter mechs with the ability to bring pinpoint damage spikes for low heat cost, and the hardpoint locations/mounts really gives it a clear line of fire compared to the Hunchback. Through in JJ's and you have some mobility and power to use... yet to try out my Swayback variant or the PPC tart I have.

As a medium, I'm going to guess no. Mediums are woefully underpowered, and PGI has no apparent intention of fixing this. Get a Jagermech instead.

Want a Cicada? Get a Jenner.
Want a Trebuchet? Get a Catapult.
Hunchback? Cataphract.

There's pretty much nothing a medium can do that a Heavy (or Light) can't do better. Barely slower, and barely larger, more armour, more firepower. And of course, the Cicada is just a ridiculous size for its role. It's so easy to kill that its slightly larger capacity is a waste compared to any light. Though Cicadas are pretty good for joke builds (4ERPPC, 3xAC/2, AC/20, Gauss, etc.)

Mediums are currently underpowered, and trying to make a medium chassis into a ballistics platform is kinda pointless at the moment. The Jagermech can do it better in all ways, save for the jumpjets. So, the jumping Blackjacks are probably the only one's worth considering.

That being said, at least the Blackjack is scaled about correctly vs. other mediums that are somehow almost as large as assault mechs.

id like to know how quickly their torsos get blown off. the bj-1x with 8mlas (34% HE) and a std 275 will do 99 / 109 with the speed tweak but if its torsos get blown off as easily as jagers, well its going to be just as lackluster as jagers with energy setups.

Minor niggle but if you add ES you can bump the engine up to an XL220 and gain some armor + another DHS.
