Sarna lists an "extreme range" of 26 hexes for the 'Mech version, for a total of 780, slightly better than LRMs. I'm not familiar enough with the TT rules to know how the extreme range stuff works, though.

Anyway, the basic point that it's not meant to be super-long-range holds. That, combined with its huge bulk and surprisingly high heat generation, makes it pretty unappealing to me.

This is correct, if you use extreme range rules. The developers have given some indication that they are using them in certain cases (ballistics don't just "stop" at maximum range), but this then means that you have to increase the range of everything else (e.g. extreme range on LRMs is 28 hexes: 840m): calculate extreme range by doubling the maximum medium range as per TacOps, pg. 85.

Also, just checked a little more and while the Long Tom artillery piece cannot be mounted on a 'mech (only the Long Tom artillery cannon can), both the Sniper and Thumper artillery pieces can be 'mech mounted (as can, confusingly, the Sniper and Thumper artillery cannons).

These do have very long ranges, even when 'mech mounted (18 and 21 boards).

So, Kobold, there you have it :P

The Sniper weighs 20 tons and takes up 20 crits (so all of a side torso and its attached arm).

I still don't think we'll see these weapons at release, however.

Bad Idea . NO AWFUL IDEA! This would take the basic ideal of what Mechwarrior is! I would only see trolls and ****** abusing something like this. This would be a excuses for someone who don't know how to pilot a MECH to use something like this.

I might be able to see something like this in a RTS but in a smaller scale with crappy cool-down and only useful with someone good strategic tactics

Clearly the Commander Role is not for you

Commander Skills:
• Order View – Allows the pilot to right click and request friendly BattleMechs to attack or defend areas/objectives on the BattleGrid
• Command View – Provides a layer of information over the BattleGrid including objectives and any intelligence information passed back by scout Mechs on the front line
Call Air Strike – Calls in an air strike that does AOE damage in a straight line
Call Artillery – Calls in a land based artillery bombardment on to a target area
Call Naval Bombardment – Calls in Naval artillery bombardment that has a larger and more powerful result than regular artillery
• Call UAV – Calls a UAV that passes overhead of the battlefield and relays ALL enemy positions to the command pilot
• Call Predator Drone – Drops a heavy explosive device on a targeted area
• Call Satellite Sweep – Full detail information is passed to the command pilot including enemy location/direction/speed
• Danger Close – A short range radar detection system that lets the command pilot know of any nearby enemy BattleMechs

Everything I see describes just about all artillery weapons as being able to fire several mapsheets.

Long Tom Cannon is snub-nosed - which means it has a very short barrel. Shorter barrel drastically lessens the accuracy and effective range of weapons (which is why sniper rifles are just that, rifles and not "sniper pistols").

I really hope there isn't arrow 4 or long tom, every time they have been implemented in a game i've found them to be far too powerful and just never seem to really add to the game.

Excuse me? I'm sorry where do you not understand the concept of a player vs player *Action* not mass RTS "Real Time Strategy" *just in-case you didn't know what the acronym means* concept.

If you want this there is another game coming out called Mech Commander but if you want to pretend your a pilot in a jump-ship, please go back in all the years of the games and see where this might actually work? But you have no actuality of history in the MechWarrior/Battltech gaming?

and btw my remarks awful was to the idea and if you want to bring remarks to the person, behoove you to research the forums rules.

Arty in WOT is one of the poorest implemented features I've ever seen in a game.
Let's hope MWO has nothing close to this.

Er... I think maybe you're confused here.
In MW4, for instance, you had a weapon called the longtom which provided slow, indirect artillery fire on a location.
