So, I was piloting a Jagermech with a 4ac2 build when I encountered the enemy launching volleys of lrms at friendlies. Just because, and I have the ammo to spare, I shot at the lrms without much thought before an idea struck me like an alpha strike to the jaw --
-- For all the problems pertaining to machine guns, is it possible to use machine guns as an alternate method to shoot down missiles? You'll need to aim and shoot manually at the missiles, and get a sense of where the missiles are coming down from, but other than that, it'll be a viable way to slice down incoming missiles before your AMS kicks in.
Would this work? Is it a potential idea? If so, what do you guys think?

I always hoped they would add this in, I mean it makes a lot of sense consider AMS is literally a machine gun. Saying that, it might take away from dual AMS but I'm guessing a single MG would be perhaps 1/3 effective as an AMS to counter this.
Good idea, I'd like to see it implemented.

It'd actually be kinda cool to boat MGs and be a dedicated Phalanx bot. Even if it's wildly effective it would give me something to DO while I wait to die when I'm caught in the open by LRMboats.

Yay, correct usage of the word effect!
Aside from that...
Seems like a good idea. Would have to be less effective than AMS though, so as not to obsolete it.
Then again, maybe not. Since MGs have only 90m range, you could only shoot down a few missiles before they hit you even if they were as effective as AMS.

I'm pretty sure this isn't possible from a technical perspective. I seem to recall that the "bullets" effect from AMS are added by the game after the calculations are done to determine how many are destroyed, so the infrastructure to target missiles with normal weapons just doesn't exist.
The other trouble about this suggestion is that there is no fundamental difference beetween machine gun bullets and other weapons in damage. Why would MGs be capable to shooting down missiles and not lasers, or LB/X-10s? It's a slippery slope.

Most mechs do not have a good enough ability to look up (poor torso twist up/down) @ the current LRM arcs to make MGs another AMS. That's the current fundamental problem with the idea.

Its technically not difficult, there jsut needs to be hit boxes added. its not a small change but not impossible. Also you dont even need to do it for individual missiles, there are plenty of ways to cheat it in the code that you would never notice.
I think that the 90m limit (actually its been extended) works well as an MG or two would provide a little cover but not a lot. makes it a more effective weapon. also tactically nce.. do i shoot the missiles or the mech attaching me? fun fun
