I have a JM6-A at 4/4 Elite. Now I like two different builds on this Mech, one with and one without Artemis. After switching builds six times I will have payed more C-Bills in adding/removing Artemis than I would for a second JM6-A.
Now my question is, will my second JM6-A also be at 4/4 Elite or do I have to unlock all efficienties again?
If I unlock say sensor range with GXP, buy the module, install it and later unlock advanced sensor range with GXP do I need to repurchase the module or does it auto upgrade?

Yep, it will be 4/4, But you will need to buy another module, or take it from the other one.

Ok thanks but the module question is "stand alone". I just want to know if owned modules will auto upgrade after unlocking the second tier of said module.

As HUcast said. You can buy a second version of the same mech. The experience is for ALL copies of the same variant. Therefore no matter how many copies you have the experience goes for them all. It is, after all, experience you earned as the pilot.

Also as stated, you will need to purchase any modules you want duplicates of or swap them out when you switch mechs.

For your stand alone module question.
You do not need to re-unlock any access to your modules.

However when you upgrade something like advanced sensor range, you will automatically make the 'modifications' to all versions of that module which you have purchased to enhance it without spending any additional cbills. Unlocking modules is just "gaining the knowledge." The first time is learning that it exists and where to get it. The second time is learning how you can tweak it to work better.

The module will never increase in price for knowing how to improve it. In a lore friendly way, you can say these second tier unlocks of specific modules are simply learning how to tweak it yourself, for free.
