So, I love my Jenners. I really enjoy a fast, light mech with jump jets. Thing is, I was trying to level up my K, and was looking for a viable build. I stuck an ERPPC and a Medium laser in it, and fell in love.

Then, a week later, I realized I was basically playing a Spider-Jenner.

So, I know I want another Light, and I want Jump Jets. Now, I'm fairly certain that at least one of the Flea variants will have Jump Jets, and it will have Masc. But the Spider has Jump Jets, and I can have ECM.

I want opinions and the whys behind them. What do you think, guys?

Spider...flea, youll abandon both either way once they put collision knockdowns back in and your soul mission in life becomes "avoiding the bowling dragon", so for now I would say spider as its here now and the flea is still a few months away leaving you less time to enjoy it.

Umm, the fact that they removed collisions and haven't returned them yet suggests that they'll be significantly changed when they're back. As for "bowling Dragons" they evened them out with other mechs their tonnage before collisions were even removed.

As a bowling dragon, I approve this message.

A 20 ton Flea will have max 138 armor. To fit a max engine+MASC to go up to 170+kp/h would require small weapons (mg's, small lasers, etc.), and thus without being able to evade aim-bot streaks in close combat with other Lights, it will be dead to those + everything else. Plus since MG's are terribad and can't destroy Mechs very quickly like MW3, it basically has everything going against it. A Flea will definitely not be for the faint of heart, and I imagine a trial version will be available on release, making it the best Trial Trap Mech ever.

Don't go for the Venus Flea Trap.

Spiders can at least play with their food Fleas.

The answer is Raven (because ECM's stealthiness is invaluable and much more useful than a Jenner's extra weapon hardpoint, also Jenner's CT is friggin' HUGE).

I have a Raven 3L sitting at all Elite boxes filled with 21,500 XP banked and a Jenner D with the same. I am probably going to Basic out three Fleas and master one and then hit master boxes on the Raven and Jenner. I might do a Spider that way too, we'll see.

@FupDup:

Yes, I know Ravens are teh spiffy. I'm not arguing that. I, however, rather like Jump Jets on my lights, and Spiders all have Jump Jets, while only 1 Raven does. I wanna go "boing".

The 5D is a top tier mech, especially if you're coming from jenners. You will be amazed how much longer you last now that your silhouette is half the size and you can actually spread damage to your other torsos. And that's to say nothing of the agility. Throttle decay is a must, because even at basic level, a spider with max engine can accelerate faster than the throttle increases with the old settings.

If nothing else, you might as well get a spider now because you're going to have to wait until August for the flea.

Might be relevant to your interests: http://www.sarna.net/wiki/Flea

Especially this: Jump Jets None

Edit: I stand corrected, there is a variant with JJs. I'm a happier person now, too. :)

my Spider 5d uses the following

xl255
erll and tag in right arm
medium laser in torso
ecm
remove all but 10 armor from left/useless arm
fill remaining space with jump jets

I have used this to *great* effect in premades, and it's "ok" in pugs. I use the TAG not only to tag for LRM's, but also as a clearance/targeting laser for my main right arm weapon. I've used erppc/tag the same way. Basically, if the TAG laser is hitting, then the ppc will too. With speed tweak I go a little over 150 kph

From the jj variant

It was capable of a maximum ground speed of nearly 150km/h, with an average cruising speed near 90km/h. This variant also had a 120 meter jump capability. Its weapons and armor however were very light: Only a ton of armor protected the unit, and the single Medium Laser mounted in the right arm was barely enough to make it a viable battlefield unit.

I cant imagine this will perform well in mwo, I cant see it fitting/using an erppc either.

In general the Flea is going to be a much better weapons platform.

The only claim to fame is the Spider-5D with it's jumpjets and ECM.

I love spiders, absolutely love them. But the 5V and 5K are really lack luster builds that you have to go to extremes to make work and in the case of the 5V you can't extreme enough. The Spider 5D is solid and dependable.

But just looking that the Flea variants your going to have some excellent options and the choice for MASC.
FLEA-4 - 5 Energy hard points
FLEA-15 - 5 Energy and 2 Ballistic hard points
FLEA-17 - 5 Energy Hard points

But also the Flea can only pack 138 points of armor to the Spiders 210

And the commando has 178 points
Yup its gonna be one hell of a suicidal ride. I hope tonnage matchmaking is done right before it comes in.

But also, the Flea is 3+ months off,

Plenty of time to get your spiders master them, tweak them and be ready to roll when the Flea comes out.

You say one or the other?

I say why not both?

The Spider 5D is my favourite 'mech in the game, but the last few patches have made it ever so slightly more difficult to use. It'll be a fun ride, for sure... you just need to be VERY careful.
