The tournaments and challenges exist in their current forms so PGI can gather specific data about specific mechs/playstyles. They gain a huge, concentrated amount of valuable info as to how the very best mechwarriors go about winning at this game and/or accomplishing a specific goal.
They are packaged as 'tournaments' and 'challenges' with rewards for the 'winners' to incentivize player participation.

It is. In fact it is the primary objective in all current game modes, not a means to speed the end of a game like most people believe. The objective of each drop is to take enemy territory while simultaneously defending your own.

Hmm. It's almost like they wanted to simulate what would happen when there's a real incentive to win a game instead of DM it up.....

I had a blast this week by Stealth Base Camping by myself or with a single friend while the rest of the team plowed ahead...
...those poor Lights thought they were being sneaky, rushing behind my team and thinking they had an easy cap... too bad I wasn't running around fast enough for their seismic sensor to pick me up.
I can't count the number of matches where it was like:
[Players]: GL, HF!
2 minutes later
[Accounement]: BASE UNDER ATTACK
30 seconds later
Prosperity park has Killed Xxxxxxx
