in a warrior's initial trial of position, they gain a rank for every mech they down. this means that for one mech they are a warrior, 2 is star commander, 3 is start captain, 4 is star colonel (only natasha kerensky has pulled this off) and 5 would leave you as a galaxy commander (speculation) however, what would happen if you pulled of 6 or the theoretical max of seven kills (there are several novels that say killing the other cadet's mech counts as a kill)? would you automatically become a khan or something?

I would highly doubt that they would even let you become a GC, seeing as that is a extremely high rank which I think only bloodnamed warriors can hold, not a fresh out of training cadet. Khans i believe are elected by the bloodnamed warriors, little fuzzy on that one tho.

I imagine they would place you at most as a star colonel

From what I understand the first warrior you engage would be someone that any competent warrior should be able to defeat. Then each warrior after the first will increase in skill to match someone in that position.

Natasha is first seen as a Star Captain in 3000. It is not mention if she gained that rank in her first trail. I would wager she obtained at least 2 kills in her 1st trail. When she returned to the clans, after almost 50 years of fighting in the Inner Sphere, she killed 4 Mechs in her second trail that the Clanners forced her to take to prove her skills as a warrior.

Yes, a cadet can fire on another cadet to gain a kill. but, only if a grand melee is opened.

Quote

During their Trial of Position in 3030, Aidan made several unexpected moves on the battlefield, resulting in the Trial being declared a Melee. Zellbrigen was lifted, and all opponents could engage the cadets at once, though all opponents (and cadets) were now considered valid targets for purposes of testing. When Marthe spotted an opportunity to advance in the Trial, she took it, even though that opportunity was a shot at the back of Aidan's Summoner, which was now fair game. This decision helped her to earn two kills and the rank of Star Commander, though it meant failure for Aidan.

It was explained that several of the cadets were doing their trails at the same time. Each cadet had their own set of opponents. Each set were spread out in a line. Aiden could see the whole battlefield. Ussually a cadet engaged one at a time. Aiden decide to not to follow normal tactics and to use a tactic that would throw the instructor off track. He rushed forward and engaged his first 2 opponents at the same time. He then turned and engaged a third, I think it was Marthe's second opponent. Thus opening a Grand Melee for everyone on the battlefield. Aiden was about to down his first oponent when Marthe, who had just downed her first oponent, shot him in the back.

It is not known what initial rank Natasha Kerensky obtained in her original trial of position. She held the rank of Star Colonel by 3003, and was actually confirmed into the rank of Galaxy Commander before joining the Wolf's Dragoons. However she lost that standing due to her time in the inner sphere and had to re-trial to be confirmed as a Clan Wolf mechwarrior. It would be probably safe to assume that she at least killed 2 mechs, if not the full 3 in her initial testing as she was considered a ristar of Clan Wolf and prior to Phelan, held the record for youngest warrior to be bloodnamed.

"I am not interested in what fictions your personal apologist might have concocted, Natasha." Carson pointed to the Loremaster. "Ask him. He has the rolls of the Wolf Clan Warriors there. The last time you were tested was in 3003. Though it confirmed your qualification for a Galaxy command, your Galaxy never saw combat. That you commanded a Triple or even a Cluster during your time in the Inner Sphere has no bearing here because it was never officially sanctioned by your superiors. You have no standing as a MechWarrior" -Battletech Blood Legacy

It's not written what would happen because it won't happen, Kai Allard-Liao got 5 kills in his trial which was such massive BS as it was.

As you progress the targets become heavier and heavier mechies. By the time you fight through a medium than a heavy than an assault than another assault your not going to have much mech left if you somehow manage to make it even that far.

The short answer is no.

The long answer is:

Nobody became Khan from their ToP. Khans are elected by the Clan Council which are made up of Bloodnamed warriors. The highest you can go without a Bloodname is Galaxy Commander & that is RARE.

To get more than three kills in your ToP to begin with, you have to initiate a free for all and/or have an agreement with the other cadet.

Tweaked.

Additionally, for the folks saying that your Mech opponents start one size and progressively get heavier as you go....that's not technically correct. Your opponents on the field are yours to defeat, how you choose or what order you choose to engage them is not necessarily pre-determined.

Alot of online gaming Clans have instituted that format, but it's not from the original lore (I believe). I might be mistaken, but I'm rereading all of the books atm and have yet to run into that type of specified format.

GC requires a Bloodname and besides, as an example, we in the Blood Spirits only ran one of each weight class of mech during our TOPs. This eliminated the GC from being a possibility. Nothing says you have to face a Star.

and what Lukoi said above my post

Actually..............

Quote

"Discovering the enemy will depend on your individual abilities and the skill with which you use your sensors. But make no mistake: if you do not find them, they will find you. As you know, in the trio of 'Mechs lined up against you, the lightest will engage you first, according to custom."

Quote

From his high vantage point, Aidan saw activity beyond a clump of trees. Apparently Marthe had discovered it, too, for her 'Mech started moving quickly toward it, feet crushing greenery into flat, scarred swaths. Switching from grid picture to natural picture, Aidan saw a trio of 'Mechs, Marthe's three test opponents, emerge from cover behind a thick clump of trees. At the same time, Bret's opposing 'Mechs seemed to come out of the ground, though actually they were cresting a hill to Bret's left. And further away than this six, the three that Aidan knew were destined to be his adversaries burst out of a camouflage cover that had looked like a group of high rocks, but that his computer's secondary monitor analyzed structurally as merely a construction. One of them, a Hellbringer, lifted its left arm and pointed it straight at Aidan, a gesture indicating that this was Aidan's first opponent.

Actually no, there are a few cases of Galaxy Commanders that do not have a Bloodname.

Good catch Jaroth, I stand corrected on the order the enemy will try and engage you, but technically that is the JF tradition and not necessarily the same throughout all Clans. Wolves traditionally have cadets fight multiple targets (lighter) at the same time, Vipers had their cadets fight each other before moving on to the next stage of Blooding etc.

But specific to tonnage, you're probably more right in this instance.
