The premise is fairly simple; different weapon manufacturers, different versions of the same.
Ie. medium lasers
One manufacturer might focus on dmg, at the expense of weight, heat or rang - different variations of this.
The same idea would apply to all weapons, so that we would have 4-5 different types of medium lasers, large lasers, ppc's, gauss rifles, etc, with minor tweaks to suit player style.
Weapon variety, not just by type, but by subtypes, would be lovely and make the game slightly more unpredictable I think.
An example:
Two jenners might be be boating 6 medium lasers each.
One might be boating 6 of the type that dishes out extra dmg at expense of range
The other might be boating 6 of the type that grants extra range at expense of dmg.
It's not much of a difference, but adds an extra dimension.
The beauty of it: you don't really have to change the design or graphics, simply tweak numbers of existing weapons slightly, start with maybe 3 versions of each weapon and see how that goes :-)

Seems pretty cool, I like it.
I would also like to see blue fire flamers that ACTUALLY OVERHEAT YOUR ENEMY.

would be great to see in game once they have community warfare going, would allow for more growth in the player base, and maybe an ingame economy. variety would keep people interested longer, and allow for deeper customization.
in other words: I want!

I am hoping eventual differences between manufacturers is on the devs. to do list.
It would make CW more interesting.
"Hey, We want some Steiner ballistics, they are better for our style of fighting. So lets either sign up for some Lyran contracts, or for contracts to ATTACK Lyran space and hope for some good salvage."
Or Kuritan Lasers, or Davion electronics, etc. etc.

I want an MG model that actually hurts people but can't ever deal critical hits.

I can see how that might be explained. A MachineGun model that fires high-velocity armor piercing ammunition. The dense penetrating core of the bullet is better able to chip away at armor plating, but against unarmored objects, has a tendency to pass completely through rather than flattening and making a larger hole like standard ammunition.

I so want that. But not now. Let them balance what we already have first.
But then ( hopefully within our lifetimes), I want it.
Along with different munitions. Which at this point in the timeline mostly affect missiles, but also the LB-X10.

That's what they should currently be. A Battletech mech-mounted 'machine gun' is a 20-30mm rotary cannon that does the same damage as an AC/2. Like the Gau-8. Not the anemic paint-chipper we have currently.
