What do you aim for at enemy mechs? Legs, Head, Arms, Center Torso? Do you follow a general strategy for aiming at hit locations?

I try to take out side torso first of an assault (excluding HGN). STK loses half of it's weaponry by taking out side torso. Atlas is easier to core if it has no side torso. Lots of XL's on Awesomes. This helps the team alot. I tend to cripple more than head for straight kill. On ballistics builds, if possible shooting the legs usually destroy ammunition, thus cripples the mech firepower.

Depends on the situation really.

Center of mass, simply to get hits if the range is long or shot is not in my favor. I'm not a terrible shot, but I can't bullseye 4 PPCs into an Atlas' cockpit on a regular basis.

Usually its CT as a primary on a fresh assault, heavy and most mediums.

I leg centurions and de arm wangs by default.

RT is also high priority on 732s and 3Ds.

The legs.
Not only ammo are stored there, people like to cheap on leg amour.
Breaking off one leg is enough a death sentence for any mech.

Start with primary weapons. When the big gun/guns are gone, go for the head or CT. Most mechs seem to have their head hitbox nested inside the CT hitbox anyway. I'll go for the side torsos if I believe the other guy is using an XL engine, like with every AC/20 Jagermech ever.

If i'm am a reasonable range, i'll go for mostly head shots. Even if I miss, I still get a CT hit. If i'm not comfortable with that, i'll shoot of center of mass of course.

The exception to the rule is when I face lights. I like to target their legs.

I automatically aim for the whichever part will hurt the enemy most with the least expenditure of ammo/heat. This means already damaged parts are first to go.

For undamaged mechs, lights and fast Centurions get legged (arm first for Wang). Slow Centurions get either CT or Head.

Catapults get headshots if head on. Otherwise I'll pick at an A1's ears or the side torso for the other variants.

Everything else gets a side torso. Which one depends on which side has the more potent weapons.

As others have mentioned I aim for heads as a general rule in an alpha build, because a head miss is a CT hit. If I'm in a light I just take the shot I can as I scoot to cover as quickly as possible.

Lights get legged, mediums and up get cored (rear if possible) except known or assumed XL variants and gauss owners who get side torso'd, slow catapults and overheated mechs get cockpitted.

If undamaged i go for the front or rear CT.
If damaged significantly (deep yellow) i go for the damaged part.

I drive a Cent with a spread DPS setup/low pinpoint accuracy and most Mechs get hit in the CT by other players so its the best way to contribute.

Depends, but if I think they have an XL engine I'll aim for a torso. Always nice to kill an enemy super quick because of their XL.

It's all primarily situational.

Since I'm a mediocre shot, some shots don't always go where I want them to, but if I started that way, I try to finish them off the same way. For instance, if a mech is known to have an XL engine, and the shot lands on the side torso, I'll take my chances and finish off the side torso. Usually that provides the best use of a mistake..

Here's the general guidelines I use:

1. Shoot critically damaged torso areas first. Otherwise proceed to 2
2. At medium to long range, aim for the lower head and/or center upper torso, depending on mech, until destroyed.
3. At close range, aim at primary weapons if damaged severely. Otherwise proceed to 4.
4. Leg them first. Then proceed to 5.
5. If legged or disarmed, finish them off with an unhappy ending.

The crotch. it's always center torso, no matter the shape or twist. Some mechs are really vulnerable to sides, like the atlas, while the highlander isn't, despite having all those guns in the right arm and torso.

If I have the range advantage or get the drop on something, I kill the legs. No one puts armor there, and bad players panic when they get 30 armor limbs taken off.

Ive been findin lately it's better to go for leg kills if i encounter a mech that has atleast one leg fairly damaged. Other wise usually pretty much just go for center torso unless the sides are damaged and taking it out will cost them a lot of weapons. But maybe against a 6x srm catapult then its a lot better to just aim for its weak arms and disable it.
