Weapons & equipment shouldn’t work over a certain heat %

Large Weapons should not work over 90% minus (grouped %) heat
Medum Weapons should not work over 100% minus (grouped %) heat
Small Weapons should work at all heat levels

Grouped heat %
If you carry more than one of a weapon, the heat level in which it should work should go down by 1% per additional weapon.

EMP weapons & equipment
PPCs+er, Gauss rifles, ECM should not work at over 75% minus (2x grouped %) heat

The heat metre is a simple way of controlling a lot of restricting factors like (radiation, energy reserves, recoil, guidance/targeting/control system stress, EMP, and common heat) some of these dangers limits should max out before others, especially if some of these systems are drawing more energy & control resources than others.

Players can still boat weapons to their heart’s content but not without penalty. Those with more evenly balanced mechs will be able to compete on an equal footing.

Note some mech chassis should be able to boat more than others, and that chassis should have a special ability.

Just no. Give them some inaccuracy with too much heat, or less power ( for energy weapons and gauss only), or higher risk of jaming ( ACs only).. but not having them work at all is just wrong.

There are only penalties beyond 100%. Otherwise the engine would shutdown at 80%.

I think the heat ceiling where by you shut down or slow your rate of fire is sufficient. This is a layer of unneccesary complexity.

But complexity is what distinguished a sim from a shooter.. oh right..wrong game :)

I'd say a resounding no to the weapons fire, but the malfunctioning equipment thing... maybe.
