Think about those Samurai movies where a guy gets cut, then a few seconds later, the two halves of his body come apart.
Or this:

Gauss Rifles have exploded since they were first introduced in TRO 2750.

Not to mention that in TT they also explode for 20 dmg, but in TT there's no doubled armor/internals, so an Atlas CT only has 31 points of internals.
In TT a Gauss explosion blew you the **** up.

CASE doesn't seem to be helping much with it.

It ISN'T an energy weapon. It is an energy intensive ballistic. Most ballistic weapons use an explosive charge to launch the projectile, the Gauss uses electromagnetic coils.

CASE doesn't stop ammo explosions from happening, nor does it stop them from destroying everything in the section. It merely stops the explosion from spreading to adjacent sections. If you're using an XL engine, have a gauss in our torso, ans have case there, the gauss explosion will still kill you.
Note that some canon builds use both CASE and XL engines, but that is a financial decision - it is done to keep repair costs, down, not to keep the mech fighting longer.

Yes. I've never been wild about CASE, but CASE II is great, dare I say, it's what CASE should have been.

That's pretty much all it shows it's the chronological order of wich weapons in game damaged you, but not how many times or in wich order after the 1st hit they hit you again.
As example if you are hit by 1x med laser, then 6x PPC and then again for 1x med laser the report just say damage done from med laser and PPC, even if you died by a med laser it won't show again in the list.
The only Usefull thing about the Gauss ammo it's that sometimes it's useful to carry it in the arm/torso side adjacent to the Gauss when placed in an arm, theorically it should absorb part of the Gauss explosion and increase your chance of survival due side torso not blowing up entirely.
