I've read many threads restating the facts that I already knew - Gauss ammo is inert, and thus not volatile, though the weapon itself is. then why have I died here and there from "ammo explosion" when the only ballistic ammunition on my 'Mech is for my Gauss Rifle??

The gauss rifle counts as an "ammo explosion" when it explodes.

Why then would it say, after I've died: "damaged by ____" and above that, "Gauss Rifle destroyed" and above that "damaged by _____" and above that "damaged by ____" and then above that "ammo explosion" which ultimately would be my cause of death? Chronologically it makes no sense. I've been in battle before and gotten the vocalized alarm that my Gauss has been destroyed, then 2 minutes later I die after more damage and "ammo explosion"

They have not addressed the message since the damage logs were first implemented. Just treat "Ammo Explosion" to Gauss Rifle when that is in use.

On the other hand, it has been like 4+ months since the damage logs were introduced. Perhaps you should send a ticket in to remind them that this hasn't been resolved for a while now.

Next time it happens take note of when it happened and file a bug report. If there really is something wrong you NEED to file a report. The guys who take care of this have a lot of things to work on, they can't comb the boards for every last complaint. If you are right, giving them the approximate time means they can go into the server logs and pick out the game and hopefully find out if there is an error (and if the error is what the game is telling you or if the error is really that your Gauss ammo is going boom when it shouldn't). And if there is an error, then they can get to work trying to recreate it, figure out what's causing it, and then fix it.

Or, you can come on the boards, complain, and do nothing because you expect a game in open Beta to run flawlessly.

It's not a bug.
The Gauss rifle can explode, it does 20 dmg, it's listed as "ammo explosion".

you were going good until the ******* remark at the end. You know what happens when you assume? I'll let you finish that one yourself. Thanks for the aforementioned advice nonetheless, I will surely do that.

Okay, I can respect that.

Their timing though is severely out of whack.

I didn't assume crap, I pointed out exactly what you did. And it is a very common thing, for some reason that just straight up boggles my mind. Quizzing the community isn't all that helpful on something like this, because unless someone goes off and plays spreadsheet warrior we are left with people's "feelings". Yeah, that and two-fifty will get you an extra large at the Dunks down the street.

The combat log doesn't seem to to be in any real order, or if it is I haven't been able to work it out, it certainly doesn't match up with the events I see in game,

As said at this stage the report is not chronological. I'ts simply a random sample of what happened to you, apart from the "Kill" explanation at the top of the screen (ie either a player name or an explosion)

I'm not sure ammo explosions happen immediately. I've seen people die to them a second or two after they took the hit.

I've had this happen as well until I realized it was my AMS ammo exploding, not my Gauss slugs

^^and this. I've shot a Catapult in an open torso with a gauss in it, had them duck back down behind the hill and then a couple seconds later they blow up and I got the kill even though I couldn't see them when they blew up.

I know that is has been stated by the Devs that the ammo does not explode but it could be a bug.
Hmm. Perhaps a test is in order. I'll put some guass ammo in one of my laser based mechs and see what happens. I'll get back to you guys in a day or so.

Unlike most other kinds of ammunition, a Gauss Rifle occupies multiple critical slots. I suspect it is possible for a Gauss Rifle to take critical damage and be destroyed without detonating. If so, then it might be possible for your nonoperational Gauss Rifle to be crit again, with another chance to explode.

Guass Rifle explosion was another OP nerf. You see Guass rifles were OP. Now they're like strapping a suicide belt to your torso with a target painted on it.

Wait what? No? Perfect weapon has to have some kind of weakness.

Yup.. I remember shooting a Stalker in the leg and then he disappearing behind a building in Snow Colony, and then getting the message that I killed him...

Considering that an ammo bin explosion has only a 10 % chance to occur, pretty good result for a pot shot. (With an Dual AC/20 however...) That's one Stalker pilot that doesn't under-armor his legs anymore.*

*) Or one Stalker pilot that knows probabilities and is willing to keep taking that risk.

Yeah, had this recently happen on an enemy I got the kill credited.

I was fighting off 2-3 Enemies at their base on Forest Colony in my AS7-D(F)... With my CT badly in shape I started to turn my sides towards the last one standing while my Weapons were on CD.

When I just turned away after giving off another volley he just died so at first I thought he got shot by a sniper but looking at the Combatlog I was credited - Must have been a late Ammo explosion.
