Nah can always find a use for a bigger engine. I still miss my 140KPH Hunchback-P w 9 small lasers.

One always wants more bro, doesn't mean it actually NEEDS it though, ya know? (though I would LOVE just one fast HBK variant....)

So I been playing my BJ-1 earlier, plus some last night.
I finally finished basics on it, and then went to a Centurion since I don't have the CBills to buy another BJ yet (innuendo, ahoy!).
Dear god the difference in survivability is insane.

Blackjack: "Oh god, he's looking at me, quick twist+jump and hope he misses!"
Centurion: "Oh, my arms are both gone, and one of my side torsos too. Time to rush straight at the atlas!"

the blackjack was never about speed my 3x BJ iv ran in various configs 2x er lg-4 med / 4x er lg / 2x ppl 4x med/ currently the build I settled with 5 x med 1x ams 225 std engine 19 double heatsinks near max FF armor....what the heck are you taling about on engines??? engine sizes IF we are playing by proper BT rules state that the next engine size up or down is governed by mech tonnage std 180 engine is speed 4..the next engine up is the 225 the next engine above that is the 270..the 280 should not fit...a awesome speed 4 requirement is a 320 size engine not 300 get it right a speed 3 awesome is a 240 class engine..nothing else should fit or be allowed according to BT rules on engine classes so your all full of it unless you are cheating somhow.

please tell me that the designers have not blown the srm pod by ignoring basic BT/MW engine sizeing rule a 50 tonmech to go speed 5 ie 80 kmh needs a 250 class engine a speed 6 96kmh 50 t mech needs a 300class engine anything other than proper engine class should not be fitable and if so that is a serious oversight.

Moving at 64kph, with an XL engine, with only a maximum of 56armor+28 internals on the CT.
I could get the same loadout in a Cataphract 3D while moving faster and having spare tonnage.

How are you only moving at 64 kph in that thing if you're using an XL - what did you spend the rest of the tonnage on? My ac20+3ml BJ-1 has near-max armor with 3 jets and moves at 93 kph with a 235XL, and I find it plenty fast enough.

The game still follows the tabletop rules for the relationship between mech engine size, tonnage, and top speed. The difference is since in this game movement is not limited to integer multiples of hexes, they don't need to restrict the allowable engine fits quite so much. A 50 ton centurion with a 250 engine goes the same speed in both tabletop and MWO (modulo rounding issues), it's just that in a game like MWO you can actually track the minor difference in speed between that centurion and one mounting a 240. Well, that and MWO also has speed tweak, which tabletop doesn't.

I'd say it's the other 'mechs that need some speed nerfing; the game is too full of too fast 'mechs as it is.

This is really the issue. Things like Jagers go WAY too fast with big engines+speed tweak. There's no excuse for a 90+kph Jager, that's just plain dumb. I shouldn't feel like I'm ridiculously gimped in a CTF-4X because I have a really small max engine compared to other heavies. The reason mediums and the dragon are in such a bad place is because heavies can and do go just as fast.

New here? The designers of this, like MW3 and 4, allow non "stock" motors. Aka, they realized that what made sense for moving on a hex board was absolutely idiotic on a video game. Not just variables of the stock tonnage.

you have got to be jokeing...the engine class restriction is one of the most basic tennates of the game.. to not stick to this opens up can o worms..bithcing just like everyone is doing now,,,this is as a horriable mistake as bad as what I had to fight against in tabletop..oh well we talked to fasa designers we can do what we want crap builds...wht the fk is it even called MW if your not going to replicate the rules mech engine class restrictions govern everything a mech can do/build out as. not just movement ...and threads like this are the result of it,, made a mistake myself speed 7 is 112 kmh not 128 ..128 is speed 8 equivilant for top end speed.mech speed is also governed by planetary mass one with not much gravity needs care.while one with lots 1.2ish or more slows you down or should.

Personnally I like the BJ-1

You can make that sucker pretty hard hitting, only thing you need a distracted opponent and alpha strike your er-ppc and ac-20 (one one left arm the other on right, to keep the nice looking dual cannons)
plus you can either put 2 jj or 2 small lazer depending on your play style.

It a bit slow, 72kph (79kph with speed tweak)

Bull****
Bull ****ing ****
You know what the biggest engine-related issue so far in this game was?
HUNCHBACKS RUNNING 350XL ENGINES.

You know, one of the TT allowable engines.

This is not TT, this is real-time, the TT engine restrictions weren't for balance, they were because the game used 30m hexes.

[edit] Oh, and the first mech ever (in lore) used an "improper" engine

again, I am guessing you played neither MW 3 or 4, since they likewise got smart?

And again, what works for TT doesn't always make a good game. That tenant was required to make hexes work. In a video game it's just stupid.

If that bothers you too much to get past, play MW: Tactics. They got your precious hexes.

Strategic ops, P 189, under FrankenMechs.
Almost any engine can be used, divide rating by tonnage and round down.
