That isnt a boat, That is a pretty well-balanced mech. The reason it kicks *** is because it isn't a troll/mouthbreather build, and wont shut down after 2 alphas.

That's because it isan't a boat.

This has me wondering what some peoples definition of boating is.

Boat is the fact that you mount the same weapon many time on the same mechwarrior. Like quad-PPC, or six machine guns. It emulate the canons that were identical on actual warship like the one the pirate used. At least thats how I understand it.

edit; that being said thats a pretty good build. I need to take a look at highlanders. 60kph with a lot of firepower and very versatile. No wonder why nobody play mediums when you see something like that and as a medium you can barely go faster... whats 20 more kph going to bring to the table anyway.

Actually pirate ships were out fitted with some times up to a dozen different cannon sizes and calibers because they used what ever they could fined. British, French, and Spanish Man-O-Wars on the other hand would be the very definition of bloat boats as they carried only 1 or 2 types of cannon sizes with them, all of which were BIG.

This is why I am in favor of limiting the sizes of STD Engine for most Heavies and Assaults while still allowing them to reach their higher speed while using XL Engines which makes them more squishy (Dragons, Awesomes, and the up coming Victor are exceptions because they are ment to go fast for their weight class). This Highlander is using an XL Engine, for it goes fast but its very easy to kill. Still, good load out.

I'm under the impression that 'boat' is short for 'gunboat'. A gunboat, in my understanding, is a boat that's more gun than boat and not strategically useful in a general sense, only useful for limited situations. Gun boats are used for patrolling rivers usually, rather than the open sea.

We play in the equivalent of a river, rather than the open sea.

Whatever its origins, bloat boating means stacking the same weapon repeatedly in order to reduce ammo issues and have all the weapons fire at the same rate, generally strike the same section and deal all their damage at once. These builds have an excessive advantage over balanced builds because they are able to one or two-shot enemies because all their weapons will strike the same point at the same time.

Balanced builds have to converge several weapon types, meaning damage is generally more spread, whereas boats will be making one hole in one place, and will end the career of most lights/meduims and even some heavies with one shot. Even if they dont kill in one hit, the damage is so severe that chances of survival are tiny already anyway for the receiving end.

A "Boat" is a mech armed with only one weapon (but multiples of it). Examples include nothing but PPCs, nothing but medium lasers, nothing but LRMs, nothing but one specific type of AC, etc.

Some mechs are clearly designed to be boats.

Boating isn't the problem. A broken heatscale with no real penalties for overheating is the problem.

why not take a DDC ?
