I heard a lot lately that many people complain about the Mech usage.
Too many many Heavies, too many Assaults, too few Mediums, etc., ...
Tired of facing 8 Stalkers?

New Sub-Gamemode:
Restricted Slots

I played a lot of MOBA-Games and this is an alternated version of the typical pre-match character-selection, which would fit greatly into MWO imho:
After finding a match, the game will not immediately start, but bring the players to a pre-match-screen (Where the upcoming map is shown or not, but this is another issue to be discussed).
On this screen the teams will be shown and every team has 2 slots of each Weight-Class (or other combinations) randomly and equally assigned to the players.
That means both teams have 2 Assault-Slots, 2 Heavy-Slots, 2 Medium-Slots and 2 Light-Slots randomly spread among their players.
Players cannot see the slot assignment and/or mech selection of the enemy team.
The players have now about 1 minute to:

- Pick one of their own working Mechs which fits into the weight class of their slot or below.
- Pick a trial Mech which fits into the weight class of their slot or below.
-Trade a slot with another team-member and pick a Mech which fits into the new slot.

EDIT (to clarify):
- You will be able to see which Mechs (incl. their weaponry) your teammates are going to take. Thus giving you the option to pick a mech with a loadout which currently fits your team's needs.

- Mechs can only be selected if they have a valid loadout (Engine equipped, 10 Heatsinks, etc.) and their loadout cannot be changed in the Pre-Game-Screen.

- If the pre-game-timer ends and you haven't managed to select a mech, the game will randomly choose one of your Mechs or a Trial for you and start, to not delay the game for the other players.

Examples

ex. 1:
The Player "1337mac" gets a Heavy-Slot assigned. He can fill this slot with either a light, a medium or a heavy Mech of his own or take a trial-Mech. He knows he wants to play a Jenner anyway.
So he writes into the chat: "D00ds? some1 wants my heavy slot, wanna play light!"
"Gangzta1234" answers: "Yeah lets trade!"
1337mac klicks on the "trade slot"-Button somewhere next to Gangzta1234's name, Gangzta1234 accepts and 1337mac picks his Jenner and Gangzta1234 takes his Jagermech.

ex. 2:
The Player "hans" gets a Light-Slot assigned. He is very sad because he wants to play his Stalker.
hans writes into the chat: "Can i have an assault slot pls?"
"NiceGuy1" is a nice guy and trades his assault slot.

ex. 3:
The Player "n00b" gets an Assault-Slot assigned. He is a noob and picks a trial-jenner without asking for a trade. Welcome to the world of online games.

ex. 5:
8 - Man Drop: The team is coordinated and has already chosen which player is going to play which mech, before the game has even started. The Pre-match-screen opens, they trade their slots among each other to make them match their setup, they select their Mechs, done.

ex. 6:
8 - Man Drop: Concept: "Spider fun drop!" Everyone picks a spider, nobody cares about the slots.

ex. 7:
8 - Man Drop: Everyone wants to play a PPC Stalker. Doesn't work. What a pity.

2/2/2/2 is just an example of slot distribution. If the community wants to see only 1 Assault per match it could also be 2/3/2/1 or any other combination.

This slot system could also be interesting for the upcoming Community Warfare.
F.e. if a Faction controls a key-planet in a system, they gain an additional Assault Slot while fighting in said system.

What do you think of this?

Instead of the whole trading slots etc. simply have MM pick one of your "Ready" mechs that is still needed.

By being able to pick from a player's complete pool of owned and working Mechs, even a random team would be able to field a balanced setup. Just observe what your teammate's Mechs are and pick your own Mech accordingly.
Therefore being limited to 4 Mechs seems a bit too harsh to me.
If your time on the Pre-Screen runs out, a Mech from your Bay, resp. a trial-Mech will be selected randomly for you.
So since there is a limited timeframe to pick your mech, it won't be possible to delay the game start by spending 10 minutes on your Mech-choice.

Nice idea, this would make an end to the "300t fast&agile vs. 500t slowmo drop"-issue,
especially while only having gamemodes with win conditions based on capturing/fast movement.
This should bring in some balance in case of overall movement speed.

I support this idea for a new game mode. However, I will probably not gonna play it since it will take a long time to start. Wasting my time when I could be earning C-Bills.

New game mode... Pffffshhhttt...

The solution to this problem is insanely simple. The longer you don't drop into a match with a mech, the longer it builds a bonus to xp/c-bills earned for the next match. (with a cap naturally)

Rested xp for mechs. You should have had a V8!

What about those people that get assigned a light slot when there best (or preferred) mechs are assaults?

This makes too much sense for PGI to implement.

You cannot complain about inflationary usage of Assault and Heavy Mechs without making a compromise.
If you want to have a balanced game experience someone has to play NOT an assault.
You still have the option to persuade your team to hand you a slot over.
Another option is to drop with 7 people you know and make them give you a slot, resp. discuss your setup before gamestart, as mentioned above.
In the end: If you can't stand the thought of not piloting an assault, dont play this sub-gamemode, but don't complain if you end up vs. 8 Stalker. You cannot demand other people to not play an assault, if you wouldn't do it yourself.

I don't see how this would fix the silly random or arranged teams in any way.
First of all: XP isn't relevant anymore as soon as you mastered the mech and got all the modules you need.
Second: How is that changing the team composition by any means? It just encourages people to play mechs which are rotting in the Bay. This could be an Asssault or a Light. That doesn't change a setup per se.

If you consider playing a more balanced game-mode and maybe more rewarding gaming experience as "wasting your time", because you are in for the grind, then don't play it.
However, if you can spare the 1:00 - 1:30 min before game start, it will surely pay off.
