Melee would immensely help undergunned Mechs. Punch those Min/Maxers right in the Mech Face!

Cant remember what XL I have in my Fame but I do 95 with Speed tweak. Weapon wise I use 4 med lasers and a gauss. I can sub Gauss for an AC/10 and SRM 4/6 or streaks. Thing with the Dragon is move, move, move. Don't sis and slug it out. My avg damage in the Flame is about 450.

ES, FF, 340xl w/ 3 internal DHSs, 2 ER PPCs, 2 Md Pulses, 1 SSRM2, 1 MG or AMS (your choice). You run at 101kph with Speed Tweak and have a nice ranged punch with enough close in damage to annoy people. Build your Dragon like it should be played - on the rims of the fight and far away from anyone that can frag you.

The Flame is my go to mech when I want to win games.

XL350, 4LL, 15 DBL Heat SInks, Endo and Fero.

This build is not a good brawler. In fact, no Dragon build can go toe to toe with anything bigger than 50 tons. What this mech excels at is a Med/Long range fire support mech. Use the speed to reposition quickly so as to not be the focused mech. Stay back, behind the brawlers, and melt components off of enemy mechs. You can get 400+ damage fairly easily playing like that. At 104KPH, it also makes a decent capping mech. I have won a lot of games by just going for the cap, especially on Tourmaline where this mech's heat efficiency is a real detriment. Also, with the implementation of JJ shake, this mech is probably the best poptarter in the game now. Gauss on the Flame or PPCs on the other variants are mounted very high and a speed of about 100kph will let you ridge hump very quickly. Usually too fast for the enemy mechs to get a good bead on you.

In short, don't play this mech like other heavies. You must not put yourself in a situation where you are the focus of bigger mechs, or you will die quickly. Support your teammates with ranged fire and watch the money and victories pile up.

I love Dragons and I got all variants including a FLAME. But as the ppl befor mentioned there are some rules to follow or a Dragon pilot.
The key for a Dragon is speed (over weapons) and the mind that you are piloting a quick medium Mech. Basicly you can deal with anything, but with the right tactic and behavior.

General rules:
- Take the initiative.
- Pick the right target and do not engage well armed or heavier Mechs than yours except they are damaged.
- Pick the battleground and avoid open terrain.
- If necressary retreat, vanish out of view and reposition.

When you are in a support fire role:
- Stay on medium and long weapon range.
- Shoot out of cover.
- Never expose your nose for too long.
- Change positions often.
- Stay behind the own battle line or flank.

Engaging the enemy:
- Try to use terrain and obstacles to overcome great distances.
- Never run straight towards a Mech that is facing you, run diagonal instead.
- Always attack from the flanks.
- Shoot on the run and use your arms to aim.
- Twist the torsor to distribute damage.

In melee:
- When you are in motion allways push forward.
- Do not stop or go backwards.
- Pass an enemy an Mech circle dance around it.

Dragons have the terrible huge center torso which is so easy to target. i think then only way to keep them alive (similar to Awesomes) is to stay at range. the Dragon 1C (champion) is one of the best builds i've seen so far. i keep trying to use my 1N as a brawler..... and losing

The 1c is a chassis variant not the champion Dragon, the 1n is not a brawler.

I'm a fan of some strat combat games like TOTAL WAR series and old WWII close combat series. In these games you got light inf, heavy inf, spearment/pike, archers, heavy calvary, light calvary, siege and gunners.....

I like to think of dragons, awsomes, and soon quickdraw as your heavy calvary. You don't send these guy in first you send them in the mix of a fight already happening.

Flanking the enemy is great but flanking an enemy already engaged in combat will crush them.

I remember once we just started fighting in forest colony at the edge of the lake a lance of 2 dragons and 2 awsomes ran through that tunnel in forest colony, it didn't matter that my whole team was together, I knew we were dead, I was already fighting guys at distance and closing.... and a whole lance pops out of nowhere.

That'd be your problem right there. A Dragon can win a brawl if the enemy is already messed up pretty bad but if the enemy is relatively undamaged then you're most likely going down.

I do highly recommend taking advantage of the 1N's dual missile slots to get dual SSRM2 action going on there. Combined with BAP I find it keeps those pesky lights off the slow folks you're working with. SSRMs can also be abused with free look to fight without exposing your CT directly.

Other than that, a couple ML and an AC10 will let you put some decent hurt on the enemies your team mates are working on and can turn around many heavy mechs if you get behind them.

I couldn't get Dragons to work for me either. I might try again eventually but for now I just put it down to not fitting my play style.

Ah, the Dragon.

No matter what mech I try, I always come back to my 1C.

Uac5, Lrm10, 4mlas, XL360. Its well rounded, fun and challenging.

I am not sure they can be made to work. During closed beta I ran Dragons almost exclusively and jumped at the chance to purchase Flame. However now, the Flame is by far my worst performing mech and I really regret spending the MC.

Honestly not sure what changed. Maybe it is just that there are so many other better mechs out there but I went from sometimes getting 4-5 kills a match back in closed beta to getting 2 kills in 10 matches.

Try it with an AC20 build. With ES, FF, and DHS, you can carry that with 4MLs and 4 tons of ammo along with 358 pts of armor and a standard 300 engine. Much more durable, and surprisingly good as a brawler that way. I'll admit that I had my doubts about running a build like this with it - but it works.
