The Current Player Count Must Be Very Low

1. A change of meta (or perhaps even a balanced game for once =D)
2. More game modes, something interesting like King of the Hill, Escort Missions etc...

Player count is way up compared to where the game was at two-ish months ago with the HUD bug debacle and state of the jump jet game. People left in droves, and while many have since returned, many have not. Regardless, Bullock's statement would be factually true as the player base is higher than it was two months ago. Unfortunately, and on the other hand, statements such as that twitter post lack a qualifier in regards to timeframe, and thus is not an accurate assessment of the state of the game. Is player count way up from original open beta launch, or is it up from the previously mentioned HUD bug debacle when people left in droves and still down from where it originally was previously? There is no real way to tell because PGI doesn't give any real information that you can base any conclusions off of.

These guys insist on what a special skilled™ minority they are, after all. The more they are catered to, the more the rest of us lose interest and move on.
This thread alone is strong evidence. "Nyeeeeh! You're terribad! I rank fifth on teh server!!!1" "no u dont ur a scrub i beat u that one time" around and around and around and around and around and around and around.
The vast majority of the playerbase don't bother reading the forums regularly and even fewer bother reading 16 page deep threads. As much as we like to think we're important, our little d*ck wagging has very little impact on the community at large. I assure you, no one outside this small echo chamber is quitting the game over this stuff. Believe me, no one at PGI is catering to us or asking our opinions on balance.
Now, I have some d*ck wagging of my own to do...

If I recall, I knicked someone with my medium lasers outside their optimal range. Then I took a bad hit that sliced off one of my side torsos in one volley. I then spent the rest of the match failing to find a good angle of attack that wouldn't get me insta-cored. My team eventually got sniped to death and I quickly followed.
Anyway, I don't really mind what you think of my abilities, but I have a special place in my heart for the hunchback 4SP. I feel I need to show what it can do. "She may not look like much, but she's got it where it counts, kid."

I would argue that having too few players for the matchmaker to properly do its job is a gameplay balance issue, because the result of having too few players is horrifically imbalanced matches.

But you do what you want.

If leagues or standings come later - fine. Just please god let us play when, how and with whom we wish.
Mech Warrior 4: Mercenaries did that perfectly. It was an unbalanced online game full of poptarting, but there is no denying that the lobby system was brilliant.
