To elaborate, R cycles through targets, attempting to target things close and in front of you first. If you can see an enemy mech with a triangle over their head, it is possible for you to target them at that moment. You can keep them targeted as long as you or someone else on your team has them selected and in line of sight.

Very fresh! As said above, R allows you to cycle through targets which it will try to target things closest to your reticle first regardless of proximity to you.
Beyond that, there are certain conditions which you cannot target them. These include but are not limited to:
- Target has ECM.
- Target is within 180 meters of someone allied to them with ECM.
- Target has died.
- Target is not within line of sight of you or your allies.
- Target is outside of the 750 to 800 meters sensor range (your default maximum sensor range is somewhere in that area).
- Target (or yourself) is experiencing a glitch where they do not register as an enemy. (This bug has not happened in a long, long time).
- Target is an ally. (Can't target allies.)
- Target is not actually in line of sight even though you can see him (because of invisible barriers that block your weapons; bad terrain hitboxes in some areas are a good example).
- Target has stealth armor (not yet released).
- Target has no engine. (In closed beta you could start a game without an engine but could not move or twist.)
- Target is powered down. (You cannot target enemies that have no power; however you can counter this with the installation of "BAP" Beagle Active Probe).
- Your sensors are damaged or destroyed (Feature not enabled yet).
- Target is underwater and completely submerged. Water counts as an obstruction of line of sight.

well l ll chock it off to ECM or out of range, l know what "R" does but it hasnt been doing anything when l try to use unless previously targeted by another player. It has resutled in me not being able to use LRMs when l want to or when l see them first.

Yeah, that sounds like ECM then. For LRMing distant targets you can counter it by constantly firing a TAG at the target while it's visible.

If the opponent has ECM, there are a few ways to counter this and use your LRMs.
- Have a better spotter
- Use TAG
- Use Narc (heavier and less effective than a tag but the bonuses stack)
- Equip an Advanced Sensor Range module
- BAP will pierce ECM at close range, but too close for your LRMs
