It's funny, but you can tell the low-end of the ELO bracket when you start seeing the name calling and what not.

As the above members have stated, and it can not be stressed enough, get on team speak, find a group of players that you work well with, and stick it back to the pug nutz that did you wrong!
Ever since I joined up with the BWC, its been a completely different game!
Good Luck to ya!

People were trying to help me.
Looking at the key commands I see that 'n' is used for Nightvision. -Yup, that would have been useful.
The problem?
If they were telling me to turn my nightvision on then this had to mean I was being spectated. Uh oh..
So people were watching me stumble about in the dark running full-tilt into walls, getting stuck in corners and otherwise act and move about like a headless spastic chicken co tributing absolutely nothing to his team. :L
These guys at least were offering advice when they could have been throwing insults.
Good for them.

Should someone try sending iNanook a message, just asking to read the replies? (If someone does, say so, as iNanook probably doesn't want a dozen emails...)

We just play for fun and you'll certainly be able to learn as you go along without the harassing.

Dying in the first few minutes of a battle then complaining because someone isn't killing a enemy the way you would have, too pro.

Indeed? Now, I'm pretty sure when I play with my friends in the 1st RDR, it's putting me in a higher Elo bracket than what I'd see otherwise. I was wondering if I was pulling them to a lower Elo bracket in the process. Fortunately, we don't see that much name-calling either way.
Last time I got into an "argument" with somebody it was pretty much "Your face is stupid."

Start the match by telling your team that you are new, a lot of the time someone will speak up and give you a hand or just stick together.
If you haven't completed 25 matches yet then you are still using your cadet ELO and being matched with other new players. You may find more unsavory folk down there depending on how serious or childish they are about the game.

Sad, I loved Battletech back in the day.

Sadly some of the general users are not nice people. My experience is that in MWO, this is kinda rare. As already stated, being in a unit does limit your exposure to those jerks. Here is the Ronin Legion public TeamSpeak server. Feel free to drop on by and hang with us. We enjoy talking Battletech, doing drops, helping folks out, and keeping a positive attitude.

If I may make a suggestion to new players, it pays a lot to state to your teammates at the start of the match, "Hey guys, I'm new to the game, can I stick with you?" Even a short message alerts them that while you are new, you are willing to learn and take suggestions, and can vastly improve the dynamic of the group. I've dropped into groups where one or two players send this message and the veterans are always more than happy to give pointers. After all, this is a team game and what better way than to help your teammates help you?
As others suggested, you may do well by joining a group. My group Skye Rangers have a big player base and even a dedicated training group for newer players.

Most multiplayer games simply are better with teamspeak (or any of its competitors). Even in Planetside 2, which has built-in VOIP, my outfit there uses teamspeak!

Your enjoyment of the game is what you make of it.
He did have 1 bad experience which is a shame, but it is online gaming. Thick skin required usually.
Once again though, that is not the norm. Most people are friendly and willing to help. Just let your team know that you are new.

Great news is most of the people in the same match that were heckling were also new or otherwise bad players themselves, thanks to the ELO system that shoves new players all together.
Though I advise you to take a moment to click on the little mech icon to the left of Launch but to the right of all the tabs, and then "Testing Grounds" for any future familiarizing.
Provided you have teamspeak 3 (free to download at http://www.teamspeak.com ) and enjoy the company of men (and the occasional woman) in their late 20s to early 50s, the Zhi-zhu Mercenary Corporation (Website) takes on guests from time to time. Relaxed atmosphere, international group, home of one of the most eager to help forum lurkers around (myself), some beer (in my case coffee), bad humor, no drama and the occasional youtube video or screenshots of awesomeness.
Lights, mediums, heavies, assaults; drive what you prefer and arm it how you like -- personally I enjoy slapping on flamers and machines; brown (damn filter) yourself laughing if you like but you'd be amazed what could be pulled out of my mechs using them!
We can help ease you into the game at the very least, give you a banner to fight with at the most.
Some vids.
Playful 4-man. (Very funny especially toward the end. I happen to be using the current trial 4X Cataphract.)
Coordinated 4-man. (2 Jagermechs for direct fire support, 1 stalker for indirect lrm fire support, and 1 Atlas to tank for us).
Fully organized 8-man (Zhizhu Merc Corp. versus Skye Rangers 10th Regiment)
I love that you posted a vid showing my fellow Skye Rangers (even if I'm from a completely different unit within the Skye Rangers, being a member of the Snord's Irregulars myself). I must now go watch the vid.
