So I recently reinstalled MWO, and decided to save up for a Highlander.

Of course, I'd rarely ever see any aside from the occasional LRM boat Highlander or Gauss/PPC boat.

At first I figured it was because poptarting was nerfed, so everyone just moved on to Stalkers or something, but then I actually got one myself and holy ****.

WHY. Why does it reverse so insanely slow? 30kph reverse speed is absolutely ridiculous, I don't see any balance reason for it to be that way, there's nothing the Highlander does that the Stalker doesn't do better, especially now with screen shake, and it's lopsided weapon placement combined with it's sluggish torso twist speed means it won't do any better than an Atlas, on top of its pitiful engine ratings, so why the crappy reverse speed? It completely gimps the mech, you can't back out of any fight nor can you quickly move into cover due to the fact that it reverses as fast as a legged mech.

I know someone is going to tell me "well use it as a ranged mech!", but you can't even do that, as the arm mounted hardpoints require you to expose yourself out in the open, which is suicide in this current meta since you'll be stuck trying to slowly reverse while getting pegged with several PPC shots, or worse, you'll have to stop, turn around and expose your rear armor.

Anyone else think the reverse speed on it is ridiculous?

Nope, when my lrm highlander is in reverse its not the speed but terrain that is the problem, mainly.

The Highlander could do with a bit of a non-JJ manuvering buff. Reverse and twist speeds are a little slow for what is supposed to be a very mobile Heavy Assault.

I thought if I put some JJ's in it, it would help, but even its jump jetting is sluggish as hell, it's not even worth it to put in more than 1 imho, I can't wrap my head around why they'd gimp it so bad.

I run all four in a 733C brawler and I do find them very very useful for picking my battlefield and for ambush (hate seismic wallhack!). Having one JJ is fine unless you want to catch someone in an area where you are able to move around them laterally and vertically constantly; with an arm mounted AC20 this is a huge bonus(I should add that I don't mean circle strafe and hit jump unitil you run out of juice... I mean in and out of canyons and up and over buildings while remaining on target.. better not to run out of Jet Juice just before you make that last jump that lands you behind your enemy)

It's not the highlander that's bad there...

Soooo, you want it to reverse at the same speed as its forward movement? It's an assault mech. It's slow. That's kinda what they do. If they pump up the Highlander reverse speed, then I want to see Centurion 9Ds running backwards at 110kph.

Why would you reverse in an assault mech?

Now that JJ are hard to use, hill-humping of course.

I've always been under the impression that reverse was a specific percentage of forward speed. Is it actually by mech?

Also wondered about reverse speeds. My hunchie is faster then my cent, but my cent seems to reverse quicker. Yes I reverse. Good for popping out , sniping and backing into cover before bee lining to the next sniping spot. Yes I am a hunchie and no I am not going toe to toe with your atlas. Get over it.

I've tried only one HGN before PPC-tard nerf. Sold it. It's not mine. To say the least.

Hardpoints placement is just ridiculous. Max engine gives speed for an 90-ton mech slower, than 25-ton less engine for an Atlas. (Yeah, joke). Yet too slow to even compare with Stalker. So, why bother :)

When your forward speed is only 54kph you can't really expect your reverse speed to be more than 2/3 can you? Nope.

Slow reverse speed I can handle. Slow acceleration/deceleration rates? Nope. It's what ruined the Highlander for me.

I use my jets while backing up. I use them just enough to get me off the ground. It works well if you're trying to get back under cover.

I just ran some tests and hurrr, the Highlander actually reverses at 40kph with basics, so not too bad, I guess I was blinded by my rage at an ungrinded variant, it also has a comparable 6 second acceleration to top speed time in line with the other assaults.

The mech still doesn't feel right to me though, though I can't pinpoint what it is exactly.

Oh well.
