Okay, fairly new guy that clearly hasn't put in nearly as much time as some people (those guys that have unlocked and mastered every mech O.O), but just trying to double-check something that's not very clear.

I've been rolling with a STK-4N almost exclusively since I bought it as my first mech and I now have all the Basics unlocked. But to get the rest, I apparently have to get two more Stalkers? That cost 7-10 million c-bills each? This seems a bit...well...steep, to say the least, since I'm an Assault player.

Also...if this is in-fact what I have to do, any good way to go about it? Or any recommended variants to look at? Cause the various Stalker variants really don't have that much difference unless we include the Misery, which now we have $30 thrown into the mix (new video game or one mech...ouch). Waiting for a stalker trial mech doesn't work, does it? lol

Yeah that's what you have to do.

I would suggest either just grinding it out, or buying a few cheaper chassis first so you have something else to play. A bit of premium time also helps if you're happy to spend a few dollars.

This is part of why many players suggest starting off with Mediums rather than Assaults.

If you start with assaults it gets expensive, and you also have a harder time learning about maneuver and positioning.

Aye, but I'm hardly new to Mechwarrior as a whole, so that hasn't been too much of a problem ;) This was more me staring at the business model and going "whaa?" :D

On the bright side, once you've unlocked master on any three assault mechs you'll be able to proceed from elite to master. 3 Variants at full basics are required for Elite, but for Master you only need 3 fully Elite'd within the weight class.

It's to encourage you to spend money to skip the grind. Judging by PGI's recent statements on Premium Time sales, I'd say it's working.

I did the grind on my first two Mastered chassis (Trebs/Commandos) and it did take a fair while but I was happy with it. After that I decided to invest in some premium time and some MC to convert MXP to GXP to make the grind quicker and I've Mastered Pults, Highlanders and Jenners very quickly since then. It's actually a very good business model.
