I already made this suggestion not much ago, in a post with multiple suggestions. But since it didn't have many views I decided to ask the community about this one in particular, which I think it may be very useful. Personally I'm missing lots of messages and I would like to be able to see previous messages just in case I missed some important tactical stuff or something. Thanks.

I would prefer they just build in voice chat but scrolling would be nice.

What? Who cares! Have Devs work on in game voice comms. Text chat then becomes obsolete.

Garth try passing on the font size is impossible to read for some of us. I am nearly legally blind and can adjust to about everything else except maybe the comapass rose. No biggie there once you know the map. But honestly it is really hard to spell check or read info with the font so small. At least make it adjustable. I miss 50% of whats typed if not more and get pretty pissed of at the nimrods wanting to greif me over misspellings. Explained it to one guy giving me hell typing in caps and his response was I should kill myself. Got this way protecting his butt so would like to meet him in person.

Integrated VOIP should be a higher priority on the user experience "to do" list.

Usable text chat a close second.

As someone who plays with a friend or two (and is therefore in the PUG queue as not enough people to make a full pre-made) I have no intention of using ingame VOIP as I will be using external VOIP.

While I fully support dev time and resources being spent on integrated VOIP (and will likely use it when solo queuing) that is not a reason to abandon text chat.

Agreed. Fully functional text chat is a must-have feature.
However, I think integrated VOIP is a higher priority at this point, since text chat is already implemented and just needs polishing.

I agree. Ingame VOIP should be a high priority in any game which rewards teamwork.

:edit:

And realtime... text chat is fine in turn based games like chess where there is no rush to communicate.

One thing I find odd is that they are spending priority dev time on implementing 3rd person POV to increase usability for new players instead of focusing on integrating VOIP and other features that will actually accomplish that task much more effectively.

Many new and casual players do not want to waste time loading up a third party VOIP program just so they can use voice comm in MWO. The new user experience should be as streamlined as possible. The less they have to do to get fully immersed into the game, the better.

While agree built in voice chat should a high priority, this type of feature is part of what I consider a basic functioning chat system and should have been in all along. While I really enjoy the game I am constantly boggled that the chat system is such a junky cluge. Chat is a basic function in multiplayer games.

Wait, how has such a simple chat feature not been brought up by the dev team?

Maybe I'm mistaken, but I think the feature was in the game in Closed beta, It just got removed with the new scoreboard and jazz. But maybe I remember it incorretly.

At times I wonder if this game was ever meant to be online at all.... just say'n this is stuff that was fixed in Meridian 59 (ouch dated myself there).

Hey lets have predrop chatrooms where we can talk about what mechs to bring.... oh yeah wait now I'm just getting silly they expect me to join a guild get an out of game voice chat program and do all this stuff their since they don't even have a fully functional grouping system in the game (honestly its the most ******** join a group system I have ever seen post EQ) I guess that falls under my first point.

Been suggesting this myself before, so let me chime in with a few additions:

Make it scrollable

Make it "collapsible", meaning add a function to enlarge the chat-window to show more than the last 4, 5 lines at a single key-press. Push that key and the window will enlarge to show the last 15 or 20 messages. Press it again to return it to its original size.

Add a time-code (based on the mission-time elapsed) to every single message.

While we're at it, how about making it generally usable? How about making ESC close the chat window instead of the workaround of pressing ESC twice to pause and unpause? How about making the pregame, postgame, and ingame chat the same so your message isn't eaten, then posted half-formed if the game starts or ends while you're writing?

Yeah ... Pass this on!

Psshh ... :P ... You have some time left before our little precious wish has its first anniversary. If you are quickly implementing it you still can prevent us from nagging about not getting a scrollable chat for over a year!

cheers!

//edith: on second thought ... dont implement it quickly, please. Instead read through this thread again, collect all the good advice given, extract the needed info, go into a design-kumite, plan a thoughtful implementation which can be controlled via keyboard ... and most importantly ... tell us that you will implement a solution and tell us WHEN it will come (roughly) This is such a tremendously needed feature for ALL the non-voice-using playerbase. It is virtually not understandable that you ignored this for such a long time. Try to find a game without scrollable chat (or a 2nd screen where such text is displayed like quake3's console) ... i am really curious what you will find. Sorry for venting ... i did just want to state the need for a scrollable chat, but then i got carried away for a second ^_^
