Let's make the PPC projectile a small bomb instead of a pinpoint. The projectile can increase with size as it travels (like a cone). So at 90-450 range, say, the PPC still does pinpoint damage, and beyond that the size of the projectile increases linearly with distance. To compensate for the loss of pinpoint damage, the overall damage could decrease less than lasers beyond the optimal range.

This would make it affect different sized-mechs differently. Large components, like those of an atlas, will likely still be large enough to have the projectile just hit one component like the CT. Tiny mechs like the spider will be so small that any increase of the projectile size will make it large enough that the damage will be spread across many components. Of course at short range you can still leg those pesky lights, but a long range you shouldn't expect to one-volley them into oblivion.

The last MW games I played before MWO were MechWarrior 2 and MechWarrior 2: Mercenaries (the memories!), and I was very surprised to see the PPC changed from a ball of energy that explodes on contact into these gauss-rifle like monstrosities. So, make it right! Change the PPC into energy bombs instead of energy needles.

TLDR: Short range no change. Long range PPC's do AoE damage instead of pinpoint damage. To compensate, reduce overall damage reduction beyond optimal range.

Nostalgia aside, Mech 2's bleu balls were pretty bad honestly. But I do like the idea of having them to some splash damage (with decreased damage to primary hit location). MWLL did this and its pretty decent.

*lol it censored out "blu.e.balls.", but not "blew balls"

Yea and watching that video reminds me of how much more difficult the PPC's were to aim - slow projectile speed!

Never use MW2 and MW2 Mercs to inspire your PPC mechanics. They were stupid and dumb and really ineffective.

If anything, draw inspiration from the original Quake's lightning gun. That thing was a decent PPC. Alternatively, pick a fantasy RPG and copy it's lightning bolt spell.

You can ignore the MW2 part if you want. The point is, high alpha on single components from extreme range is the problem, and this fixes it.

Ya know what... I believe this discussion came up during Closed Beta. From what I recall, the PPC does (did) indeed have a projectile diameter, and that's why you can squeeze a laser through some gaps that a PPC bolt can't get through...

I don't know if this has changed since then, but at least at one time the PPCs had a small radius of space around them that would trigger an impact event.

Yeah it did. The bolt animation and impact size was probably the size of an Atlas' arm. When it hit, it would hit mutiple components unless you were aiming at really big areas such as an Atlas or Awesome or Cat CT.

With lights the CT was hit more often as it would hit side as well as CT.

With HSR and Karl's fix this suggestion would be terrible for lights as the CT will be the first to be blown, torso twist left or right, it won't matter if the CT is always being hit. Think streaks but nearly everyone has a PPC now.
