When I first started playing MWO, I had a theory...

Those people who pay to paint their Mechs are better MechWarriors who don't.

I reasoned that only those who play the game a lot, would bother spending real cash to decorate their Mech. And, as they're playing a lot, those who paint their Mechs are probably better players than those don't. They might even be in a merc unit, and painting their Mechs in team colours.

However, having paid attention over the last couple of hundred matches, my theory seems to be dead wrong. There's either no correlation at all, or possibly even a negative correlation (ie those who paint their Mechs are worse MechWarriors than those who don't).

What's your view and experience? I'm just interested to know, is all.

The only correlation between the pilot and a painted mech is that the pilot of a painted mech has a few bucks spare to paint his mech.

I know a good number of people that don't paint their mechs on purpose. That way they blend in with stock/trial mechs.

That makes good sense.

I only painted mine when I started going in a lance with my sons. That way we can identify and team easier.

while they are generally unrelated A person that spends alot of real money to customize their mech are more likely to play and the more they play the greater likelyhood of them getting better at the game. That being said stripes do not in fact make your mech go faster and franken camo does not in fact make you a better pilot.

I think it is completely related.

Actually, from personal experience, I KNOW its related, at least for myself.

When I look good, I play good, as theres a certain amount of confidence that comes with knowing my mech looks like an unstoppable badass hate machine.

I have one mech i've come to name "Orphan Bomber." It has Phraken for its paint job, and is a HGN-733c.

When combined with a loud rif of adrenaline pumping metal, i've been able to get her K/D up to 2.53, far above any other mech i've ever run.

And thats without a single ppc.

Yellow attracts bugs, like Spiders and Cicadas... probably Fleas, as well. I don't recommend it for assault Mechs.

On this account, I don't have a fancy paint job on any of my mechs. They're dull green. I 'splurged' on a single dab of orange trim.

On my no-house-affiliation account, my Awesome "looks like a paint bucket threw up on it" to use the words of one person in match. If you're going to be a big barn of a mech that can't be missed, you may as well go all the way with it.

I do not believe painted mechs has any connection to being either good or bad pilots. Pilots with bobble heads on their dashboard, now that's a different story.

Back to the painted mech thing, I once had an Atlas on our team painted up like Ronald Mc(Freaken)Donald, and he was ripping sh*t up.

I dont paint because the prices are outrageous.

To buy everything in this game would cost more than buying battlefield 3 at release and all the expansions.

I don't mind supporting a company, but not when they are gouging me, I choose to stop supporting.
