(my TL:DR, too long didn't read for you older guys, is at the very end incase you want to skip a LONG post, something I'm known for)
Wow, just wow.
Little back history for some of you, I joined EVE in 2004 because there was no Mechwarrior MMO and the 'crappy' mmo they tried to release back then went down in flames. I've been playing ever since, and yes I've fought against goons and with goons. And before that I played Btech like crazy everywhere I could on forums and table top all over.
I gotta admit it really does make me disappointed in a ton of my fellow Btech'ers when I saw this thread. I've had a ton of fun with and against goons in EVE and they turned the game on it's head over there. Best part was, they needed to, and it was needed BADLY. I can already see the bs that they put a stop to starting here things like "I wonder who the best faction is lets take a poll" and crappy threads like that where people became as elitist as all hell. I remember watching those threads thinking "wow this is EVE, everyone wants to be BoB and that's the end game". IT SUCKED!!!
Then the whole game changed, Goons came in and all this e-honour bs got tossed out the door. Yeah, I know in Btech their trying to bring back the whole "A mechwarrior is a knight with his duty and blah blah" but come on, this at it's most basic level is supposed to be a 'WAR' game, not a jousting match where both sides are equal and we eat cheese and wine between the matches.
In EVE they stirred up almost a 3rd of the game in a few months, it was freaking great. Instead of static borders and wolfpax bs we had entire regions changing hands (the btech equilivient of a march or PDZ), corps were crushed, reformed, crushed again and new corps and alliances sprang up. I can't tell you how many times I'd get up in the morning just to read the Scrapheap or Kugu forums to see what changes had gone down the night before. All of you should hope that level of excitement and fun happens here, don't read into the hype and bs that tons of sore players spouted about them from all sorts of games. There will ALWAYS be people that get angry and pissy when their side is losing. I've fought in and watched tons of wars with goons involved, know what they bring that so many don't? Freaking organization, tons of it, ODDLES of it. Many of the alliances and coaltions they've fought have hinged on a few individuals and when those people get tired, quit or retire from the game those alliances become crap. Goons have dozens of people getting stuff organized and sorted, most units here will have a few guys, probably not even 12 that will work together. In goons they'll be able to get on TS, figure out who are the scouts, the support, the brawlers and the defenders and possibly put many companies of those into the field. The other side will have people join up that aren't that organized. One side will be defeated, and that side will usually be pissed that it happened. And suddenly we'll have tons of MORE posts about how GSwarm is cheating/lying/exploiting to win.
After seeing it go down over the last 8 years I've gone from really hating em (they destroyed the alliance we had a home in back in 05) to actually enjoying playing with em. All of this junk that many of you are spouting makes me angry, not at Gswarm but at the Btech'ers here. I really want our little community to get the heck out of being a 27th best sci-fi franchise, btech is AWESOME and if it allowed mechs to be over in EVE I'd probably never sign off of the game. But don't hate on them because some of the LOUDEST people talking about Goons are some of the people they face rolled and are angry about it.
If you want to compete with or try to defeat the swarm (in game), organize yourselves in your factions. Get forums up, prepare for killboards, run training with your crew(s) on how to get better teamwork, don't be smug and think that recruiting is a bad thing, many of you are from the beer and pretzel gaming era and you most likely have kids or responsibilities. Having the ability to have a few hundred people in your faction be able to step up and take someones spot when they have to do something in RL isn't a bad thing.
And for pete's sake remember it's a GAME, more people playing it is awesome. If tons of goons start playing this game, HOLY CRAP, the game might LAST long term and not die in a still born fire. Who here DOESN'T want that?
Oh but wait, you're right, the tons of claims of warcrimes in game or how they are cheaters and exploiters is obviously tons more plausible, lets go with that. BS, grow up and realize that Something Awful could be great for the game, and that's coming from a hardcore Btech'er himself. Btech has sat back and been screwed over for almost 15 years now, Fasa collapsed and Microshaft took away all of the GOOD parts of Battletech to make those walking nightmares of MechAssault. Piranha is bringing back ALL that awesome stuff and someone in Goons noticed that this game, just might, HOPEFULLY, be something worth a shake.
You shouldn't be angry, or saying you detest these guys from crap you read on some old forum post from 5+ years ago. You should realize that they will most likely mean the difference between signing on and seeing a few hundred matches and a few THOUSAND.
TL:DR: From a long long LONG time Btech'er realize that it's a good thing that a massive online gaming community is getting involved with our favorite franchise and not a bad thing from some mouth breathers that lost to them in other games. Grow a set and welcome in some MORE gamers to a great GAME. It will not disappoint you.
Btw, I'm a TEST man myself, I love being there and Goons have been pretty freaking awesome to us (as an alliance in EVE). Play the game, and realize that the other person your shooting at in that other mech, if he's wearing a Goon tag is simply that, another person!
Couldn't hurt to treat em, oh I don't know, like another gamer?
