The Locust, a speedy reconnaissance Mech, infamous for its quick speed and extremely quick manoeuvrability, was first introduced by Bergen Industries in 2499. The Shadow Hawk is a versatile and fast medium Mech, arguably most famous for its use by Grayson Death Carlyle of the Gray Death Legion. It was first built by Lang Industries in 2457 during the so-called ‘Golden Age’ of BattleMech creation. The Thunderbolt is an eclectically armed heavy Mech, originally designed as an Assault Mech by Earthwerks Incorporated in 2491. While no longer the biggest chassis around, the Thunderbolt is still respected for its varied load out and especially roomy cockpit. The Battlemaster is a Mech with a very storied history, and has been used in countless battles throughout the inner sphere. With an adaptable weapons platform, this Mech has been used in virtually every role and on hundreds of battlefields, including the Battle of Coventry by Wayne Waco, commander of the Waco Rangers.
Each package delivers both the Phoenix BattleMechs of each unique chassis type, plus two Standard Variants. See the package details here for the full readout on the package contents that accompany each tier. Project Phoenix will be available for a limited time only and once vaulted, these packages will never be made available again! A FAQ of the project can be found here. An official feedback thread can be found here."

It would be nice is some of the history behind the different mechs was included when getting info along with the stats.

I think you just click on the more expensive package and it charges you the difference. Mind, I haven't actually done it, but I'm pretty sure its that easy.

Short answer no.
Longer answer whilst still being shorter than this sentence I am writing to tell you the shorter answer?
The price of the lower tiers gets deducted from the higher ones.
In other words if you want to, you could simply give them $20 every week or so till you have bought up to overlord or beyond.

Phoenix Version (LCT-1V): 1x Medium Laser. 2x Machine Guns. Normal Structure, Normal Armour.
Normal Versions:
LCT-3M - 1x Medium Laser, 4x Small Lasers, Anti-Missile System. Endo Steel Structure, Ferro-Fibrous Armour, CASE.
LCT-3S - 2x Streak 2, 1x Medium Laser. Endo Steel Struture, Ferro-Fibrous Armour.
PGI, why did you choose the most useless Locust for the Phoenix version?

I actually have a 120 Founders on another name. I just don't post with it anymore. As for "not buying", that's exactly what I'm doing with Phoenix. Too bad I didn't know in advance for the first time though. Assuming you did want one; this one is much cheaper but with lot more Mechs. So ya, they ripped us off.
I don't feel ripped off at all. My Founders 'Mechs have taken me a long way In this game. Having an Atlas at the get-go? Damn, that's pretty great. Besides, the Founders program was kind of a kick-start fundraiser for MWO that made the game today, and I'm happy to have made the contribution. Also really looking forward to having 18 'Mechs In October and December. Again, this should help the game along and hope it brings new, fun and exciting things on the horizon.
Edit: Had two quotes. Deleted one.

Because the LCT-1V is the classic, iconic Locust.
It's like why they make a new Ford Mustang that looks like the '68 model instead of the '86. Because the '86 isn't the iconic model that the '68 was. I mean sure, the '68 didn't have a Koni suspension system, tilt-steering, power windows or even seats with lumbar support, but that's not the point.

Pretty much this, yes. All the Founders and Phoenix special variants are, in fact, the same as the 3025 era primary model of the mech found in the Technical Readout books. AS7-D Atlas, JR7-D Jenner, HBK-4G Hunchback, CPLT-C1 Catapult, LCT-1V Locust, SHD-2H Shadow Hawk, GRF-1N Griffin, WVR-6R Wolverine, TDR-5S Thunderbolt and BLR-1G are found in the original 3025 Technical Readout which was the first TRO published by FASA and therefore the mechs most players from that era consider the "main" models of those mechs.

That's just the looks, right? Being the case, they all look the same, right? It's not like the chassis gets a radical overhaul between variants in this game (maybe TT is different? I've honestly no idea.). It kinda comes back to why I don't understand there are Machine Guns in the game when there is no infantry to be seen (and according to Sarna MGs are Anti-Infantry), but it's also that the mech with all the bonuses is the mech with the most worthless hardpoints, especially when you have a measly 20 tons to play with.
I mean, Alex's art for the Locust is crazy cool, and I want to pilot it... but I don't see how a certain hardpoint configuration that isn't really pertinent in this game (aforementioned anti-infantry) can be the "iconic" (See this word so much but it's so subjective, drives me nuts) one and have all the meta bonuses, when they all look the same. It's kinda like a "F*** You, Cheapskate" to people who can only afford the Talon Package.
This is the internet equivalent to thinking out loud; I know nothing with change with me saying it, not do I expect and answer. It's just something to talk about.

The Marauder is unlikely to show up unless the Stinger, Wasp, Valkyrie, Phoenix Hawik, Ost-mechs, Rifleman, Archer, Warhammer, Longbow and Behemoth/Stone Rhino also become available for PGI to use, because they all have their origins in Macross/Robotech (specifically the Veritechs for the Stinger, Wasp, Valkyrie and Phoenix Hawk, the Zentraedi Battlepods for the Ost-mechs, Officer's Battlepod for the Marauder and the Destroids for the rest), which means risking Harmony Gold's lawsuit-happy attention, something which isn't an issue for the Phoenix mechs released so far. Russ Bullock has said, and I'm paraphrasing, "Never say never, but I wouldn't hold my breath" in regards to the Macross designs showing up in MWO. It's not that HG would necessarily win a lawsuit, considering they'd be redesigned by Alex Iglesias anyway, but they wouldn't have to. Lawsuits are expensive and even the threat of one might very well not make those mechs worth it to PGI.

I think it's this style of thinking that has ruined the world. You shouldn't be controlled or manipulated by fear of litigation when your opponent doesn't have a solid case to make against you. Bringing up frivolous lawsuits needs to have harsher repercussions.
But aside from that, BattleTech (FASA/Catalyst) should have always made their own designs rather than licensing them from anyone. I loved those images too, but I think there's a large part of the blame on the Community's part for not accepting any other images than those first used in the '80's... which is why even when they did make brand new, legal art for those 'mechs over TEN YEARS AGO it was mostly ignored or shunned as not being the 'real' art. (To be fair, that art was mostly horrible, but they could have used it as a baseline to build off of and make different iterations {with better artists} throughout the years, which is something they can't technically do with externally licensed art)

Actually it's $80 for 12 virtual robots. Yes, that still might be too much for some and that's fine, value is generally derived from a personal level. In this case, 4 of those 12 also confer hero mech type bonuses as well, making it a pretty solid purchase taking into consideration the $ value of typical hero mechs, let alone their standard variants.
