New player to MWO here, enjoying the 20 or so games I've got under my belt so far, and especially the NGNG stream with Phil&co (reason i came to mwo) but I'm curious as to how long/many games i need to play before i can do something withe C-bills ive accumulated? Is it something I'm missing or can i just only use the 4 trial mechs that are currently avail? theres no pointers or prompts from the game itself explaining any of this, and i cant use the store function or buy/customize mechs. Just curious, seems like a little more info for players starting up new would be in order to understand exactly whats happening :/

Hi and welcome to the game.

You can buy yourself a mech anytime you want (and have the cash, but after 20 matches, that should be the case). To buy a mech, go into the "Mechlab" tab. At the bottom left side, you will see the "Mech Inventory". Switch from "Trial Mechs" to "Owned Mechs". You will see three empty mechbays. Select one and click "Buy Mech". Select the mech you want and have fun with it!

I recommend taking a look a Smurfy's to see how you can out fit your mech before you buy any weapons and upgrades.

You earn the cadet bonus for the first 25 games - in total it's around 8 million C-Bills. It's worth saving it all up rather than spending it piecemeal. Almost all 'Mechs benefit massively from double heat sink upgrade which costs 1.5 million C-Bills - and so it is worth factoring this into the cost of the chassis when you are choosing your first ride.

As mentioned, the Mechlab defaults to only showing the trial 'Mechs. You simply need to switch to the 'owned 'Mechs' tab to see your available 'Mechbays.

The trial 'Mechs should give you a feel for what you might do well in. I advise new players to start with a heavy or assault 'Mech because it is easier to survive and earn C-Bills than more fragile Lights and Mediums. However - there are many other people in the forums who seem to recommend Light and Medium (Hunchback 4SP seems popular). Their reasoning differs, but they seem to think Assaults are hard to pilot well and a new player would be a hindrance to the team. I disagree. I may be in a minority. I think Lights and Mediums often need Endo Steel, XL engines and sometimes (not often) Ferro Fibrous upgrades to compete - and that seriously dents a beginner's C-Bill stash. Also they are fragile and positioning errors are punished severely by the enemy.

I started with a STK-3F, which only needs Double Heat Sinks and comes with a variety of good builds. I then moved to Cataphracts. That worked for me really well.

More info for new players is certainly required. But I'm sure they are planning a better new player introduction process for game launch - and until then - you have the friendly and helpful forums. Welcome!

First of all you should start reading these topics :

MWO beginner guide

http://mwomercs.com/...ayer read first

and Tips and useful info for new players.

After you got the basics, you can watch some of Koreanese training videos which he posted on Youtube, to get some piloting basics and improve your gameplay.

These things in combination should help you and answer nearly every question
