Ive seen some other suggestions for dealing with heavy weapon boating (ppc,gauss, ac20, etc).
Heres my novel idea:
A Power Requirement ->
Every weapon has a power requirement in order to fire. A battlemech could have for example 100 power every second to spend/use. A PPC / Gauss would require 50 power to fire. This would mean that you could only fire up to 2 PPC's per second. So if you boated 6, you would need 3 total seconds to fire them all off.
This system would just be another layer (and a logical one) built onto the current system. It creates another level of weapon control without messing with or breaking our currently implemented systems. Doesnt have to change cooldown or heat. They still do thier thing.
The devs of course would have to do the number crunching and bring all the stats into line.
In reading the Battletech novels recently, I saw this mechanic in the "Blood of Kerensky" trilogy. The clan gauss rifle is introduced and it requires so much power to fire that other weapon systems cant fire at the same time. So there was a little extra thought as to when to fire it. We dont want it that extreme, but the suggested power system can be worked so it doesnt limit the firing of 1 or 2.
I think its solid.

TY. I hadnt seen his thread till you mentioned it. Yes the basic premise is similar. Both are suggesting another layer that can be tweaked as little or as much as needed.
My suggestion was inspired by my reading of the novels and I think is very simple and logical. Also you wouldnt have to mess around with the reticle and aiming.
Plus you could tweak it to take engine size into effect. More engine = more power to work with. Or other factors.

or you could just extend the recycle/reload time for each weapon above the stock model. that way you can have a 6 ppc stalker but the normal recycle time could be 600% or 24 seonds, since standard stalkers dont have ppc's. where as the awesome that runs 6 ppc's might receive a 100% recycle timepenalty or 8 second recycle time. you should be able to make what you want in the mech lab but there needs to be a down side to makeing changes to stock builds. extending the reload/cycle time so that its proportional to the number of weapons used would incentives chain fire and smaller alphas. so your not disarmed for 24 seconds but you deal a steady stream of fire. with the alpha option.
