It would be less of an issue if they indicated options for voice chat within the game.

Teamspeak, Mumble, and Vent are all great if you know about them beforehand. But what if no one tells you about them?

If your team uses VOIP, you will know about it beforehand. I just can't imagine a situation where you join a unit/guild that uses VOIP and they decide to keep it a secret from you.

As long as I can permenantly block people, sure. If not.. I'll stick to Vent/TS.

best use of VOIP... Chromehounds.

Nah.

Splinter Cell: Pandora Tomorrow multiplayer.

Your VOIP could be overheard if you were close enough to someone, so if you grabbed a guy from behind you could talk into his ear before you knocked him out. You had gadgets to spy on their VOIP, didn't work if you were out... it was all very cool

Chromehounds' communication towers were cool but very far removed from being believable...

What if you want to do something besides play with a bunch of gits wearing a clan tag, but still want the benefit of VOIP?

This comes up every time - the people who are in organised groups sat use TS, Vent, Mumble etc. What about people who are not in a group - likely to be a large number at launch. Do you honestly think 12 random players in a PUG are going to be able to agree on what server etc - it would take longer than playing the match. The game is supposed to be about teamwork - I'm not capable of fighting a mech and typing or playing with drop down menu's. I will play but unless I join a Merc Corp fairly soon after launch it probably will end up not much. Lifes too short for hassle.

This.

Most of us don't have the patience or time to deal with clan drama and being subject to some 17 year old 'boss' and all their ridiculous rules and 'tryouts'.

VOIP in pubs has worked in the past, it will work now. The problem is by not including VOIP at launch, you'll train everyone into playing without VOIP so when it finally does show up - IF it finally shows up - nobody will use it because nobody's used to it.

The only objection one could possibly have to pub VOIP are the hyperbole crybaby whiners that have already shown up in this thread going "OMG ITS GOING TO BE LIKE XBOX ***".

Honestly, sometimes having VOIP can be overbearing. I had at one point in EVE needed to run Skype, Teamspeak 2 & 3, Ventrillo, and had the in game VOIP going. That was just to coordinate 4 separate fleets. This being a much smaller 12 vs 12 combat model does make it a bit better but still there are ways are not having VOIP to start and then using it later. As for the VOIP being like XBox Live with kids trying to be tough. Just don't play with them. Yes, we are going to be getting some kids in this game. But at times, I have found that the ones that tend to make the biggest fuss are the 20 something that are still in college. They think that they are being cool. So I tend to not play with them. At the end of the day, if I need to give out my Skype user name or log into a Vent/TS server then so be it.

If you're talking VOIP, then no.

And it is a shameful decision to not include it.

Only if it is great quality and does not have that stupid thing where you can cut other players off mid sentence.

I don't understand why some people feel that VoIP needs to be included in the game. I have played several games (FPS and MMO) and I understand how inportant it can be from a coordination standpoint. I can see the Dev's point about not putting it in. SERVER LOAD. They are going to need every bit of bandwidth to host games and provide a smooth gameplay experience. Get a Vent or Mumble server and pass the info out like candy if it is important to you. I have a group of friends ready to go. We use vent now for all our PC games. the cost is low (<&10 a month).
