So after some recent discussions on a rather popular video game forum that has a significant player base here, one of the subthreads evolved into a discussion about how much people have already spent on the game. Having spent a decent amount on this game myself, I was interested in knowing where I fit in the grand scheme of idiots with more money than brains.

With that being said, what I'd like to see is a new Top 25 list; an ongoing one that shows the people who have spent the *most* money on this game. The list should be opt-in only (with placeholders that reflect the House, Merc or Lone wolf status for people who don't want others to know about their Daddy Warbucks-style bank accounts).

Face it, PGI: People will compete over anything, and you know if someone is sitting at 26th place and only $10 off, there is a decent chance that person will dump a bit more money into the game to crack into the list. Plus, it will give those who are thinking about spending a small amount on the game a chance to see that they aren't the only ones. There is a built in support group out there of people who pay to play! Psychologically, having this list will probably have a positive effect on revenue generation for PGI.

Other possible options:
  • Top spenders over a time period (month, quarter, year, etc).
  • Honorary cockpit items for making the list
  • PGI Loyalty Points ;-)
As an aside: How much *has* the biggest spender plunked down on this game?

I am for this, even though I certainly won't be anywhere near being in the top 25.

They should all get a special forum badge >

I know some people are discussing creating a 4 digit support group.

Yes... people have spent over a thousand dollars on this game already.

Yes, with option for privacy.
So it'd look something like this:
  • Grayson: $2,049
  • Lori: $1,337
  • Anonymous: $ 998
  • ...

for some reason, I like the idea that people with loads of money splurt it on video games. Don't know why.

Great idea. A short list of people to laugh about.

Considering they have the money to splurge on a silly game, they're probably laughing at you. All the way to the bank.

Considering they choose to spend a large chunk of their disposable income on a free to play video game in the sorry state that it's currently in, i wouldn't be in such a hurry to laugh at those that dont

My dad used to be the manager of a furniture store and as a teen I used to think it was strange that people would pay extra for 'distressed furniture' (distressed simply meant that people in the factory would beat on the new furniture with chains and bats to make it look worn and old). I also thought it was odd that people would pay extra for jeans that were faded and had holes in them.

But as I grew older I stopped caring. If that was what they liked then more power to them, its their money. Some people buy lots of shoes, some spend a lot on video games, some go crazy for antique dolls.

I guess some people don't like that "new" feel.

How do you know its a large chunk? I'm sure there's probably someone on here that makes $250k+ per year...would dropping $1k per year on entertainment be that big of a deal? Or should they spend it on alcohol or gasoline instead?

I don't care who's spending the most money on this game.

PGI might, if it drives more revenue. That's kind of the whole point.
I'm just trying to help make them more successful. ;-)

I think the OP's assumption is that people will compete to be the "Bestest #1 Buyer Evar!"

But, I don't think that will work. Just a hunch.

Could be wrong though...seems like many people will fight to be the best at whatever there is to fight over.

People compete over the dumbest things. But the fact is they do compete over them.

I was at a baseball game where there were 4 Yankees fans in front of me. They bet on EVERYTHING that happened at the game. At the end of the inning, when the fielder rolled the ball back to the pitchers mound for the next pitcher to use, they bet on WHICH HALF OF THE MOUND the ball would end up on.

The job of PGI is to separate people like that from their money. And fortunately, there are some pretty simple ways to make that happen. A Top 25 Big Spender is yet another method to get people to compete and spend money, and I suspect a rather effective one.

And I guess the other point I was making is that Yankee's fans are the dumbest people on earth. Which I'm sure we all agree on. :(

You should get a whale cockpit ornament when you spend over $500.
