But I don't know the lore of the MW/BT, can someone shed some light for me?

Please list their characteristics, past history, power/regime, favorite mechs, personality, and other important information.

Thanks!

I hope this is true. Kinda stupid to ask questions like these when it's literally right in front of you >_<

Because the writers of space-knights (ie battletech) wanted the space-england society to be the heros. Simple as that. In MWO the Free World's League is the best!

Their books were written for small children.

You know, knights who save princessess, weddings of said heirs, "lived happily ever after" at the end of each novel, incapable "evil laugh" villains, heroic non-sacrifices (I will sacrifice myself for the cause... and then live to tell about it, because death is not a thing that can happen to the main cast in fairy tales), good always wins over bad in the end,...

Disney stuff... if you like reading books from the Child's Corner of your local library, or watch movies like Cars 2 in awe of the writing perfection, then that's the right house for you. :)

Kurita - Feudal Japan with some Scot, Irish and Scandinavian minorities....Liao - China and other far eastern peoples with some Scot, et al....Davion - English Empire... Rasalhague - Scandinavia with German and Japan (don't worry about them, they pretty much cease to exist soon enough!)...Steiner - German Greek, and American. They take anyone with a buck and use C-bills to line their mechs for armor....Marik - American (particularly the south west), Middle Eastern, Indian...basically people who don't like each other, held together for the common good.

If you're looking for a factor, join 2. Smallest prime number FTW!

For a faction, however, make peace that there are no good guys in the inner sphere. We're all {Richard Cameron}. Everyone has said it basically what the factions are, but my 2 cbills are to join a merc corps and fight for your favorite. Better paycheck and you aren't beholden to the monstrous dickery that is Inner Sphere politics.
EDIT: Oh, and Liao is the best. Green is a great color, they treat their citizenry well, have the best battlemechs post 3050, and have an amazing intelligence sector. Never mind their child slavery and ******* crazy rulers.

Each house has it's own pros and cons.

Also members of each house will tell you their house is the best.

First look at the lore and examine it, but then look at the player base. You're not going to be dropping in with Victor Davion here. No you're gonna drop with HHoD, Goons, and other groups.

That's the part that could change your decision. I personally like House Davion (I like the Clans more but don't tell anyone, they might kill me for it) So I signed up with Davion. More importantly, find a group of friends that you like dropping with, and then you guys can fly the colors you want, and conduct yourselves the way you believe that faction should be behaving.

If you like Davion join Davion, if you think Davion is full of jerks and they're disgracing it, then fly the Davion colors and do it right. This goes for all other factions. Merc Corps and Lone Wolves included.

My take on a short generalization of each faction:
  • Federated Suns/House Davion: essentially the British Empire, with some additional French overtones
  • Lyran Commonwealth/House Steiner: essentially the Holy Roman Empire, with heavy German overtones
  • Draconis Combine/House Kurita: essentially early Showa Era (roundabout WWI/WWII) Japan, with a smattering of other cultures (mainly Arabic) represented
  • Capellan Confederation/House Liao: essentially Qing Dynasty Era China, with a smattering of other cultures (mainly Russian and Scottish) represented
  • Free Worlds League/House Marik: essentially the Ottoman Empire, with some Indian (as in "from India" rather than "Native American") and American overtones
  • Free Rasalhague Republic: essentially the Swedish Empire, with some American overtones
  • The Clans (to be made available eventually) collectively represent the "great conquering hordes" and/or the "romanticized noble savages" of the past (e.g. the Mongols under Genghis Khan, the Macedonians under Alexander III, the Romans during the expansion of the Roman Empire, and so on), while each Clan individually represents a separate society - the Ghost Bears are generally thought to be Scandinavian (like the FRR, with whom they later merged) and modeled in the spirit of the (romanticized) Vikings, the Smoke Jaguars are thought to represent (stereotypes of) the warrior tribes of Africa's past (most notably the Zulu Kingdom), the Nova Cats are thought to have been modeled on (stereotypes of) Native American societies (with the Wanapum, Cheyenne, and/or Sioux likely serving as primary inspirations), and so on.
Additionally, ComStar (along with the Word of Blake) represents the pop-culture rendition of the Illuminati, while the St. Ives Compact takes the role of "Space Taiwan".

Why is House Davion the best?

As for why one might want to affiliate/ally with the FedSuns, specifically:
  • Culturally, the Federated Suns is based on an Anglo-American model - in many ways, it is a lot like a mish-mash of the old British Empire, the current Commonwealth of Nations, and the modern United States (which, if that is or is close to one's real-world cultural affiliation, can provide a sense of comforting familiarity).
  • As a result - and especially in contrast to the likes of the Capellan Confederation and the Draconis Combine - the Federation represents a generally more "open" and liberal society - to the point that the leadership is publicly criticized and challenged by the media without undue worry of being snatched out of their homes and offices at any hour and ending up with a 9mm third eye or a sudden case of headlessness Posted Image.
  • Given the combination of the Suns' mostly-British social model and the Davion family's ultimately-French heritage (said to be a region in southwest France called Gascony), the AFFS MechWarriors are typically depicted as filling a role analogous to that of (usually, the romanticized version of) the Western European knight.
  • Moreso than the other realms, the FedSuns is usually depicted as being interested in the recovery and development of non-military technologies (as well as military technologies).
  • The AFFS tends to have a fixation - almost to the point of obsession - and an affinity for the autocannon.
  • The FedSuns was the only nation to respond favorably to the Lyrans' proposal to try to reunite humanity under a common banner - the result was the formation of the Federated Commonwealth.
  • The current head of state, Hanse Davion, is basically what one would call a "magnificent b*****d". As an example, he addressed the most vocal critic of the Suns' nationwide education program (one Robin DeCaster) by making her the Minister of Education; "Now she is the one responsible for the government’s education policy and she’s the one forced to defend herself against the critics. It’s a beautiful example of how to handle your opponents."
  • Also, the FedSuns is the home nation of the company that developed the Marauder - the Greatest BattleMech of All Time. Posted Image
Though, it's not as though the FedSuns is without its own problems - the education system and technological prowess begins to become less prevalent and effective as one moves away from the largest population centers (to the point that some whole worlds might more closely resemble the stereotypical 19th or early-20th century American South than what one might expect of a 31st century interstellar federation).

Literature-wise, the FedSuns comes off as "the White Knight faction", and occasionally "the Mary Sue faction" - FesSuns characters can (but do not always) often come off as any one or more of: arrogant, haughty, overly self-righteous, and even outright bland.
