I do not know about the other players, but I would stick with the keyboard and mouse. I own a Logitech joystick and tried it but could not get it to work properly.

Well, my ~10 year old Thrustmaster HOTAS is fully functional in MWO, other than the force-feedback drivers not being compatible with anything newer than Vista & MWO itself not having a user-adjustable stick sensitivity.

Though, the setup I would like to have would be a Saitek X52 Flight System and the matching Pro Flight Rudder Pedals.
Does anyone have any experience with how well either or both (separately or together) work in MWO under Windows 8? :D

I use the throttle part of the Thrustmaster HOTAS, unfortunately the joystick cannot match the control over aiming like the mouse can, but setting up the throttle and rudders gives some great maneuverability in my opinion.

Joysticks are only really viable in games where mouse is non existent / artificially limited or joystick is artificially buffed.

Don't bother until they add in support for it.
Paul has said it'd require a complete rework on how mechs moved and that's a huge task. It's on a very low priority.

Thrust master throttle with a rocker for steering, and mouse for aiming / torso. This is as good as it gets. and i know at least one PGI MWO dev uses this set up (just like me) although it is tricky to get set up as there isn't much official support for it.

They added analog turning support a while back, so that reference is obsolete.

Personally, I want a small joystick that I can use my forefinger and thumb to control for precision turning. A mouse will always be best for aiming with the opposite hand. The question is where to get a precision analog controller that also has the buttons needed for all the other functions? I haven't seen one yet. All joysticks sold today are rather large and unwieldly, designed for flight simulation and such, or tiny thumb controllers used on gamepads that are way too sensitive and not designed for 1-hand use. Where's my CH Mach 1!!!? Oh, right. In my closet awaiting a USB conversion...why do I have to do everything myself? <sigh>

Why would you purposely pit your joystick wielding self against mouse users? :D

You misunderstand. Joystick is for turning and throttle control only, mouse is still used for aiming. Nobody contends that aiming with a joystick is better, that's insane.

are they even supported yet or do you still have to work around it?

And the mouse > joystick debate doesnt matter to me, I dont care if mouse is faster/better, I play games to have fun. Mouse gives me less.

Yeah, sorry my having fun is getting in the way of your min maxxing

Yes, analog turning is supported now, at least according to patch notes. I'm still working on my setup and haven't tried it yet, but intend to do so soon. If you look in the Options menu there's an entry for "Analog turn", so I'm assuming it works.

I'm in no way implying that using a joystick for aiming is no fun, or shouldn't be done by those who choose to. Many years ago I switched from keyboard-only to a mouse playing Duke Nukem and annihilated my LAN party group with it...they all switched to a mouse soon after. It's definitely worth getting used to. A gaming mouse is even better, one that lets you change the sensitivity on the fly. I use low sensitivity for slow mechs, and a slightly higher setting for faster mechs.

However you choose to play the game, I fully support it as long as your having fun and not being completely useless. And FWIW I'm by no means a min/maxxer, my most played mech by far is a Dragon, supposedly the worst of them all. But I have fun with it so it gets played a lot. GL, HF!

You can use a joystick and it works fine with the game. And you can do well with it. The mainthing it is not good at is sniping. Any way I use a AV8R-01 fro saitek and its fine. I like joysticks with built on throttles on the front so I can hold it from moving while I play.

I used to be a Joystick/Mouse user, which was superior to keyboard, but the amount of throttle use here has moved me to Throttle/Mouse.

Been using the CH setup with throttle joystick and pedals works fine for me.
It comes with it's own management program to make things alot easier.

I'm not laughing because I have the same setup. In fact, I use a wireless( ;)) trackball.

Now if Logitech also made a right-handed G13 ...
