Not to mention that LRMS are good for nudging far away enemies to get that sweet, sweet Kill Assist money.

Well, you can double your "Basic" Mech tree bonuses if you take three hunchies to "Elite", so it might be worth sticking with some hunchies to start.
I'd recommend the 4P laserboat or the 4H ballistic platform (4G is the same, only with more useless ballistics slots and less useful laser slots), since you seem not to like the missiles... Though I've seen some 4Js work pretty well as LRM semi-boats if you like that better. The problem you WILL run into, though, is protecting the hunch on your other hunchies. The SP doesn't have a hunch, which is why it's such a good starter mech. But it's an important skill to build, protecting one part of the mech with torso twist and positioning.
