I think that AMS is cool, but how about adding some type of "pilot activated" shield with very limited use. I imagine it being only available for med/heavy mechs. The device could weigh a ton, and each charge 1/2 a ton. When you use it, it could place a dome shield for 2 or 3 seconds, and use 1 charge. Not only do I think this would be cool, but it could lead to buffing LRMs a bit. LRMs effectiveness would be a gamble, since you don't know who is packing shields, and knows how to use them.

Blue Shield is the closest thing we have I believe, and that's effective against PPC's, but that's WAY, WAY later in the timeline.

ok, so it comes out in a year... still I don't think it sees widespread use honestly, though it might if the PPC meta continues for a year [or this game makes it that long]

First, ignoring the fact that almost anything plasma-based won't work in an atmosphere, I can't begin to describe how bad of an idea this is. Second, focusing on the physics portion, plasma dissipates way too fast within an atmosphere to be of any use in weapons or shielding. Not to mention you're more than likely to damage your own equipment beyond repair when using it.

The last thing we need is more items that require no skill negating weapon systems.

"No skill"? I think the fact that each charge would have a weight, would mean you would only pack a few, and use them wisely. If a person shot LRM5s a better player might save his 2 or 3 charges, until he sees 30+ missiles in the sky. Baiting out early shields would perhaps come into play, and not every mech would have them. Also if it was not available to the biggest mechs, (I forget the name) then it would be another reason to roll med/heavy. I'm new, but from what I understand, the max ton mechs are the order of the day, and I think all players like to see diversity. Now, as for weather or not plasma works in an atmosphere... jeez, I have no clue man. I doubt most other players do either. If it makes you feel better, how about a EMF? orrrrr, any number of other sci-fi shields. I'm more concerned with gameplay, than a physics lesson.

As far as I know energy shield do not exist in the battletech/mechwarrior universe so they should not exist in this game.

I like the field damper idea. cut ppc damage in half for 12 seconds, then needs a recycle timer of 1 minute to re-activate? generates heat while in use...or maybe "converts half of ppc damage taken into heat instead"?

No, absolutely no!
One of the main things that sets MechWarrior aside from almost anything like it; E.G. Starsiege and Cyberstorm, is that we don't have shields.

I personally have nothing against shielding technology; it worked really well in Cyberstorm and gave rise to a whole raft of weapons to counter it, including one of my personal favourites, the Electro-Flechet cannon.

MechWarrior is set in simpler times, we have armour which can be upgraded and several devices to help counter the enemy such as AMS, ECM and Skill.

What I personally like about MechWarrior, and have done since I first fought in the MW3 Demo (Software Mode) is that when you get hit, you get hit; it's sort of like an adult version of anything that feature's energy shielding. It also makes for a more serious simulation.

Yeah, maybe I'm not spot on with this idea, but here is the reason I say it. As it stands, if you are in the open LRM effectiveness is pretty baseline. I feel weather or not people use LRMs will depend on this baseline damage only. Too high, and LRMs is all you see, too low, and you will never see them. I'm only trying to imagine a way to buff LRM damage, but somehow penalize LRM heavy teams, or some more "hard counters". In fact, most of the discussion I see involving balance lead me to believe its been a merry go round of FOTMs since day 1, mostly involving what single weapon is the most powerful. There is much I don't know, because I'm new here, and I don't remember high school well enough to know the "universe" lore, BUT I find it obvious the game needs more meta. As in hard counters to the current FOTM. As in 3 or 4 metas on the field. Rather than one weapon type being considered best for all situations, and all legit players, rolling the FOTM, because there is no counter. Just more win.
