So I noticed that when I placed 2 PPC's on my CN9-AL with 10 x DHS that the heat efficiency bar in the mechlab reads 1.53, yet when I replace those 2 weapons with 2 x Large Lasers the bar drops to 1.47. (No other weapons equipped in either case)
Is this some kind of bug in the mechlab? Large Lasers produce 7 heat and from start of the beam until recycle is complete is 4.25 seconds, while PPC's produce 8 heat with a 4 second recycle. Something don't add up here...
Perhaps the mechlab is calculating the heat efficiency of the LL's purely off of the recycle time and not taking into account the duration of the beam?
And yes, I'm positive I'm using regular LL's and not ER LL's, as I don't even own any ER LL's.

Math is not PGI's forte.
The issue is that the heat efficiency scale does not account for duration for a weapon like lasers, so if you calculate heat generated over cooldown time, PGI would have you believe that LLs are hotter than the PPC... which is simply not true. If duration was accounted for, the heat efficiency scale would be slightly more accurate.

That's weird. I've seen several other places that the "heat efficiency" in the mechlab is a bit borked, try using mwo.smurfy-net.de for your calculations--the site uses the numbers from the game, but calculates efficiency in an easier-to-understand way.

There's a number things 'borked' about the game's heat management. Rising thresholds is a principle issue as it complicates every bit of balance and equation associated with the works.
MWO has a lot of issues. Best way to go about it is to drop into a testing ground with one of each weapon. Then choose the one that works best for you.

That is not really true, duration is accounted for, you do not start dissipating heat until after a weapon finishes firing, so PPC's start cooling right after you fire, Large Lasers cause heat when you fire, but you don't start dissipating that heat until 1 second later when they finish firing. This does totally mess up everything to do with your heat dissipation rating though.
