It's merely a GAME and has flaws just like everything else. Did they screw up and potentially mix some cultural elements? Sure. However, seeing as this is a game that takes place more than 1000 years in the future, there's no telling how things will or would end up. Also, seeing that this is a work of fiction with some historical elements tossed in, the writers and artists obviously took what's called "artistic license" and ran with it.

I agree. Though I do think since they have the chance and the knowledge now they should change it to something more culturally ambiguous to niether china or japan.

or if they are going to base it on a culture, at least have it be the correct one

Why is she not wearing a Puerto Rican uniform? It's because they don't have them seeing as they are recognized as citizens of the United States, not Puerto Ricans, due to legislation passed in 1917. Further, since the country is a possession/territory of the US, they have no military of their own and thus wear the uniform of the US. Until that somehow changes, which is very unlikely, it will remain that way. This was a poor example, anyway. Besides, nitpicking on the uniform in this instance really makes no sense nor does the greater argument in relation to whatever or however you want to classify what is being worn in the original picture in question.

okay so no puerto rican uniform. But what about a traditional peurto rican outfit. Since in the OP, the person in 1000+ years is wearing what looks like traditional japanese clothing.

This is the actual extinct form of the original ancient Dao. Only the blade and handle remains.

This is how a reproduction of the Han Dynasty Dao would look. Totally not the flaring broadsword of popular imagination, despite the great evidence in preserved artifacts, sculptures, drawings and paintings from those times.
This is a great case of how an entire civilization can develop social amnesia. Unlike the Jian, the martial arts that came with the original Daos were also forgotten as they were superceded by other Dao designs, and once that happened, the weapon died with the original styles. Other weapons like the Ji (Halberd) or Qiang (Spear) continued their millenial existance because they were never obsolete, and martial art schools persevered to preserve their traditions. Though it has to be said that another weapon called the Ge (Dagger Axe) fell into extinction, superceded by the Ji, the Pudao and Guandao (glaive), although the Ge is the predominant weapon during the Warring States and the Han Dynasty.

What a great example of the fact that the imagery we envision as embodying a culture doesn't always match up with the reality. "Social amnesia" indeed.

Also highlights why I'm personally willing to let an image like the one cited in the OP slide, since there are an astounding number of possible reasons that common weaponry or items that symbolize a nation or movement might change, especially over the course of 1000+ years of intergalactic expansion with so many cultures and peoples mingling together.

Maybe in the future racism the cultures of various peoples have changed, I mean China and Japan don't exist as nations in the battletech time line anymore, and maybe globalization has homogenized people a little more, after all one of the main protaginist characters from the Draconis Combine is named "Michael Ryan" (Tom Cruise?) and there are religions in battletech that are just combined from 2 current religions. Yeah it looks a little silly when we put it to the microscope, and maybe it was just hilarious lack of knowledge on the subject. Maybe the sword isn't a katana or a Dao but is called a "point cutty thingy" developed in the year 2456 for the Liao games which were only a mockery of the olympics, of course it only had 4 rings in its symbol and therefore was also historically inaccurate.

There is really only one way to settle this. Battlemechs at fifty paces! My money is on the Liao guy, they're batsh@@ crazy.

Edit: Hey, maybe the Capellans did it to **** off the Kuritans. What could the Dracs do about it anyways, shout profanity at them? The Fed Suns is between them.

It is very likely that the Liao bloodline as of 3050 isn't really ethnically Chinese, but Caucasians with their eyelids surgically altered to give them an Asian look. Looking like Peter Sellers playing those old Charlie Chan movies, Christopher Lee doing Fu Manchu or Max Von Sydow doing Ming The Merciless.

As it happens, the old House Liao sourcebook points out that the oldest known ancestor of the ruling Liao line (as of 3025) was Elias Jung Liao, who was half-English (from his father's side) and half-Nepalese (from his mother's side) and grew up in Hong Kong.

FYI.

Most of old Japanese EVERYTHING was based off Old Chinese Culture even the swords.
Most of the Old Chinese Culture and history was forgotten or burnt when a new Emperor took
over. cleaning the slate for the new Empire. sad but true.

The Sword shape used by Japan came from the Tang Dynasty in China.

and when this game was made the information was limited. and all asians looked alike. kinds stuff. (no disrespect).

So with the melting pot of people in House Liao we have so many mixes. I was told Romano Like Gin in his tea. or in anything thats is mixable. Thats not traditional Chinese! So cross cultures. Taking in the good ideas from the world makes us stronger. Unity. new Technology. Respect and Understanding.

So on a happy note. on special at the Hoegarden Cafe in St. Ives. we have over 200 beers from every culture. and 300 types of booze! If you say" Long Live Candace Liao! " you get Buy 2 get 1 FREE!

and in all this he said she said crazyness. " I would rather have a bottle in front of me , than a frontal lobotomy "

Have fun Everyone.

Recreation of a Tang Dynasty soldier. This one carries the Mo Dao, an anticavalry sword that is the evolutionary ancestor to the Zhanmadao (Zanbato) or Cutting Horse Blade. Like most Chinese dynasties, the Tang faces threats from northern nomadic horse riding peoples, forcing the creation of specialized brigades designed to face and cut down enemy cavalry attacks.
