I also love Scotch; Lagavulin 16 is probably my favourite, but Oban 14 is also excellent. Of course, the problem is that I am a grad student, and a bottle of those costs $120 where I am! Purchasing those is not exactly sound finance on my part.

And so, while preferring the fine complexities of single malt, I have found myself drinking a lot more bourbon recently; While certainly not as fine as the top-end Scotches, I find that $40 bottle of bourbon is comparable in quality to a $60+ Scotch! And so, instead I buy a great deal of Woodford Reserve. Bulleit is also excellent, and **** Creek is mighty fine as well. If you scotch drinkers are looking for something new to try, I would heartily recommend a nice Kentucky straight bourbon (JD can insist on calling itself 'Tennessee Whiskey' all it likes; it's terrible, it's welcome to the name).

Edit: Typo

I got into scotch with a 10yr Laphroiag and it's still my go to for 10yr's. Though I'm kind of disappointed with their higher end stuff. (the cask strength will clear your head out for sure though)

Last bottle I enjoyed was a 14yr Balvenie that had be aged in rum casks. Gave it a nice flavor perfect as after meal drink.

It's in my profile.

Scotch is my drink of choice. My current favorite is Glenlivet 15 Year-Single Malt-French Oak Reserve. Has an amazing finish.

I don't really like scotch, but i have to say, Glenlivet is awesome, one of the few i drink.

When I drank and could afford it, its was always Macallan 12 year old Single Malt.

Still love it but with kids I cant afford it expect a fresh bottle for my birthday.

Awww. Poor guy can't enjoy the finer things like a good drink cept on his b-day. That makes me sad for you. If we ever meet up, good drinks are on me!

I'm a big fan of Islay scotches like the Bowmore. I just love the sea salty aspect some of them have. Makes me think of the sea.

Laphroig is my scotch of choice, a friend of mine once likened drinking it to being hit in the face with a turf wrapped brick. Personally I love the tarry front end and the way it mellows.

Although I will admit that I'm a bit of a heretic and drink it with Ice (I love the way the texture and taste changes as it warms in your mouth)

Most of the Classic Single Malts are the bomb, however I prefer Talisker Distillers Reserve. Fantastic! Planning a trip to Skye to tour the distellery.

And in terms of how to drink, I always borrow a quote from a friend of mine from the time he ordered a scotch in a restaurant and the server asked him how he liked it:

"For the love of god, neat"
