The developers should consider changing the way "Speed Tweak" works in the Pilot Lab. Instead of giving the full benefit to all 'Mechs, it should look something like this...

Speed Tweak
Increases top speed by:

10% for Light & Medium Mechs
5% for Heavy & Assault Mechs

This would help increase the number of light and medium mechs on the battlefield. All to often, heavy and assault mechs are the majority which is the reverse of what it should be. Thoughts?

Good idea, engine size balances though...

If a light/med pilot wants to take full advantage of this - they need to run max engine size..

I shudder when I see slow light/med mechs...

I tried to help a guy earlier fix his Centurion build by dropping the AC/10 and bumping up to mid 90s instead of running at low 60s.

He wrote me back saying how his build was so much better and that the speed didn't matter.

He's a Cent with a AC 10 so it's not like common sense is his biggest strength.

When I had a cent I was running 90 with a Gauss and 2 srm6s.

If you're gonna prorate it by weight class, then do 2.5% for assaults, 5% for heavies, 7.5% for mediums, and 10% for lights.

That said, I dislike the idea. Having it be % based already makes it benefit faster builds more and slower builds less in terms of real speed increase. Prorating it would put fast heavies and the like at an unnecessary disadvantage. They already lose a lot of payload for their speed, and losing out simply because of arbitrary weight categorization is dumb.

Then how about we let mechs like the AWS, DRG, and QKD have a higher % than other mechs of their class?

It'd expand the quirk options, and that would be good, but it still seems like an unnecessary move.

Are Atlases with 325 or 350 engines really too fast? Are Catapults with their 310s too quick? It just doesn't seem like a problem to begin with, and if it isn't broken then don't try to fix it.

While I get your reasoning, I think they just need to put in more objectives and scouting functions for faster mechs to become more useful.

Until the speed cap is opened up all these fixes are just dodging the problem. Let lights and mediums be fast again.

I think it's basically pointless since it wouldn't make less people use assaults. What we need in the long run is at least some game modes that involve tonnage limits. There's your incentive when you can either drop 1 assault, 2 mediums or 3 lights.

Double heatsinks for a light also benefits them the most. They only need 10~12 to power their weapons so they don't give a **** if external DHS work 1.4

Endosteel and FF also only works better for lights because they will never be able to use all that critical space. Heavier mechs on the other hand... Again.

So yea. I really hate all these light mech trash players who aren't happy enough that nearly all the important mechanics in the game give them a solid biased sloped advantage over heavier mechs. Kinda sucks that I'm the only person who notices these things and are willing to complain about them. ~Sigh~

I feel smell of ******** =(. Lights are OK. This topic is about mediums too - they are really useless now.  So don't be so mad, heavy/assault pilot.

P.S. A little peace of trolling:
Light mechs have huge advantage on assaults and heavies - that's why we see about 10% of lights, because they are OP and players don't want to play OP chassis =).

Great idea. In fact, I think every weight class should have their distinct mech trees to diversify them.

And when I say mech trees, I mean real trees, not just a series of checkbox to go through.

you'd hurt the dragon which some people see as just a glorified Medium in some cases. But frankly they need to completely redo the engine/speeds for all mechs. It's messed up that there are heavy mechs that go faster then some medium mechs, and that there are light mechs that with the exact same engine and overall weight have differnt top speeds.....

Many lights can't run engines over 250, so will have to pay both crit slots and tonnage for extra heatsinks to get up to the required 10. And trust me, lights aren't immune to heat problems.

Both Endosteel and FF are tonnage-based, so will benefit lights the least. On my Commando, I get a whopping 0.59 tons extra if I sacrifice 14 crit slots. Endosteel nets me 1 whole ton for 14 crit slots. That's 1.59 tons for 28 crit slots - and at that point I'm at a real risk of running out of crit slots if I want to mount ammo-dependent weapons with more than one crit slot as well as DHS.

A Stalker gains 4 tons from Endosteel, and 1.45 tons from Ferro-Fibrous.

Perhaps the reason you're "the only person who notices these things" is because you're dead wrong?

I am against it. lights already benefit most, since 10% of 130kph is more then 10% of 54kph. And like already mentioned by others: Some heavier mechs are supposed to be fast, why punish them with that?

Having a tiered system for elite benefits would be counter productive. Now if you just flat increased the speed tweak bonus for light mechs to 15% and medium mechs to 12.5% or something similar that might make a little more sense. That would break the current speed restrictions PGI has on light mechs right now though so it wouldn't happen until performance issues with speed are fixed.

I'm going to keep my faith in the idea of PGI being aware that lighter mechs are being piloted less, and that they are thinking of ways to fix it. Till that happens I'm going to keep supporting good ideas I see in the forums to help increase their visibility so PGI can use their good ideas. =)

It's kinda sad that this is true.

An AC 10 should be a decent weapon.
