I am still fairly new to the game and i love my catapult K2 so far.
But I want a mech with more armour and more firepower that can be effective at medium/long range. So I whas thinking about an assault mech!

I had 2 mechs in mind, the highlander because of the decent speed, great armour and good hardpoints + jumpjets.
And the stalker as it seems fairly similair to the catapult K2.

What do you guys think I should go for? And why? (builds for them are welcome!)\

My catapult build:

Well, I started with the STK-3F - one of it's quirks is better torso twist. And with the new movement penalties, it'll take less of a hit than other assaults. Avoid XL engines (big honkin' side torsi). See Smurfy's site for good builds in general, but I boated LLs, and after completing elite unlocks, could maintain nearly continuous fire long enough to drop most harrassers.

Atlas or highlander hands down....or wait and get the victor, and/or it's hero counterpart that will be available today for mc.

Get a Stalker.

It will be an easier transition gameplay wise if you are going from a K2 to assault, and they are the best assaults in the game right now.

One thing your mechs so far have in common is that they utilize mainly high-mounted weapons. Since the Stalker is the same in that regard, you might find it easier to play with it than it would be getting used to weapons mounted considerably below the cockpit. Only thing you might miss is ballistic slots. The Stalkers have none, except for the hero mech Misery.

The Victor is the mech that will be available this month. It's an 80 ton assault mech with Jump Jets. Now here's the kicker. It seems all of the non hero Victor's have atleast 4 jump jets, and start with a 320 engine. This means that the Victor's will be the fastest assault mechs in game, where the Awesome 9M is able to match their speed (both come with a 320 engine so their max engine rating is 390) and being beaten by the Pretty Baby (400 max engine rating), but again, JJ's. What's more is that most should be able to carry an AC 20 in the right arm, so they will be like a lighter Highlander 733C.
Whats more is if they give us the Victor 9A1, which should have a ballistic hardpoint in both side torso's, there will be alot of people running tripple UAC5's in it, maybe 4 of them if the right arm has 2 ballistic hardpoints (the 9A1 is one of the many Victors that posses an AC 20).
As for the hero Victor coming out today, I have yet to see any confirmation or details saying that, though this is before the Patch Notes being released.

I've had both and i like the Highlander due to jump jets and the harpoints for the AC weapons.

I am new to this game too so I don't really have a recommendation for an assault class for you. One question I do have though is if the K2 was your first mech why are purchasing other mechs instead of getting two other catapault variants so you can unlock elite and master pilot skills? You look to be spreading yourself thin with buying mechs from other classes instead of focusing on skilling up on your K2.

Correct me if am I wrong, but after reading the patch notes it seems we will only get the Hero one today (which I can't get)? No standard C-bill variants?

^^ This :)

Looked over your post record... from what I can see you have a high mount energy/ballistic heavy mech with no JJs and a high mount ballistic heavy mech with no JJs. Presumably you have Basic finished in both but you didn't even put an XL Engine in the Catapult which is basically the only heavy mech you can really get away with using XL without fear. If you get an Assault now you place yourself a long way off from ever getting Master rating in anything.

If you really insist on going this route without Elite in Catapults or Jagermechs then I recommend a Highlander for one simple reason... it has Jump Jets and you have never really played with these apparently. The Hero Victor is also an option but I'm assuming you aren't going to buy MC yet. The Stalker would just be a bigger version of a Catapult so in terms of game play... not so different although you could start messing with missiles.

Still my main advice is getting Elite rating in either Catapult or Jagermech.

Nope... non-hero variants later. New roll-out plan for mechs from PGI.

The new SOP Hero mech first then the variants at the end of the month. The people who have to be "FIRST" with latest and greatest must spend real money to have it.

You're right about elite and master skills. but the other catapults are not realy interesting to me due to all the missle slots. And right now I kinda want alot of different mechs to play with untill I have a couple that I love :)

The Stalker -3F (greater torso twist) I have 6 ML and 4 SRM6's on mine. A 66 point alpha strike is always a nice way to say hello. I own the 3F, 5M & 5S.

the worse team you have the more damage you have to deal :) seen ctp-k2 dealing 600 dmg in other match

on the topic all assault mech chassis have their strengths and weaknesses so you better try every and choose one, i will only advice you to stay clear of the AWS family, there is a lot of better mechs coming in the niche of "fast assault" namely viktor and battlemaster.
