Are PPC's lightning...or are they lightning-like? Even if they are not quite lightning ....since they are "particle projection cannons"....guns that project particles that are accellerated to near light speeds...would not these particles make a lightning like thunderclap due to hitting the atmosphere at such velocities?

Seriously...I've always thought a PPC should sound like a large lightning strike up close....and it should be slightly different each time because "particles" vary when hitting the air...air currents vary and can cause a slightly different sound...air pressure can make it sound different...

Am I being obsessed or is this a good concept?

That is a good observation. Even though apparently a lot of people like the sound PPCs currently make, thunder would be cool too. Also the reasoning make sense. But no they arent lightning, because lightining is electricity, not just light and heat like a PPC (I think?)

Lightning like, due to the static electricity jumping into the air from the stream

PPCs are just a generic energy cannon. The fluff to describe them varies greatly and the pseudoscience behind them is sketchy at best.

Then again, I'm one of those guys who disagrees that PPCs should be basically an energy-based gauss rifle, as it makes the weapons too similar and makes sniping too easy.

I would think something like the projectile from MW3 followed by a lingering lightning effect like the PPC effect from MPBT3025 would be awesome.

I think they should make a sound like a shelf-full of physics textbooks falling down a flight of wooden stairs.

I think they should take a long time to charge, charge into large balls, then slowly follow there target like a missile.

Yes im kidding ;)

Screw that. I want the massive blue lightning covered balls of hatred traveling in a straight line at about 60kph that the old Mechwarrior 2 had.

You could just walk out of the way before they arrived. But damn did they hurt if they hit

from sarna.net...

The Particle Projector Cannon (or PPC) is a unique energy weapon. PPCs fire a concentrated stream of protons or ions at a target, causing damage through both thermal and kinetic energy.[

I think it's safe to say that the method of "firing" the protons or ions could very well be some form of manipulation through the use of electro-magnetic power because the definition goes on to discuss the "electrical" damage effects to mech systems. Nevertheless....I still say accellerated particles are going to make a thunderclap.

And, that said, if you know even just basics of particle physics, that still doesn't make any more sense ;)

Even if they managed to condense all of CERN into a weapon the size of a Volkwagon, all a proton stream would do is bore a tiny hole through a mech. Not shoot a giant blue exploding pulse of energy
