the overall dilemma for the Dragon slayer is that trying to shoot long range I usually end up hitting dirt 10 meters in front of me because the weapons are so low to the ground and when I go brawler, I usually have nearly all my Torso armor stripped before I can close with the enemy who always has snipers. I've had good rounds but on the whole I think it's a serious underwhelming mech.

I use an xl400, UAC5, ER PPC, and 2 SSRM. Works well enough for me since I typically prefer faster mechs. Will probably be the only assault I can tolerate once I can finally get speed tweak.

That is what JJs are for. It's still possible to jump snipe with the DS, although it is challenging.

I run this mech closer to stock than anything else in my mechlab... Aside from the ridiculous ammo placements (that seem to be standard on all hero mechs), I've just added gauss slugs and a second SRM6. You could easily sub out the XL330 for a slightly bigger version -there's plenty of stuff to cut from (SRM ammo, heat sinks, etc...).

It's too easy to go charging in with the DS since it feels so mobile and fast compared to the other big guys...getting stomped in the first few minutes of the match isn't any fun. :)

I'm currently playing it with the XL330, Gauss, ERPPC, two LL, 2 JJ, and it's working out very well as long as I always tag along to support another Assault Mech.

it feels like a heavy, plays like a medium. try to fit in an XL400 decide what you want for your main weapon (Gauss, ERPPC, LL, AC10) add a couple of support weapons keep 2-3 JJ's. the victor is not a jack of all trades mech. choose what range you want to fight at based on your main weapon, keep moving, jumping. stay on the edges at first and look for openings.

I really feel with ya, my beginnings with DS was really SAD and I will not share my thoughts during these times:)
I tried this (and variations of it) build and I can say my feelings are close to be happy now:)
http://mwo.smurfy-ne...1b310e188f04561

Variations:
1. You can strip 2 JJS and trade them for AMS
2. You can swap the LL for (ER)PPC if you are more sniper
3. You can swap 2xAC5s for gauss rifle + 3xammo and spent the remaining 4 tons as you like:) ie SRM6+1ammo)

This build is also not bad, but it is slower and runs hot really quick, and I feel that slowness and heat is a biggest killer of this mech (keep in mind you will face other assaults very often with DS):
http://mwo.smurfy-ne...903c26e834393c6

Basic points for this mech:
1. Be carefull where are you going!!! (even with these 79kph you attract much attention from the enemy, cause you are assault)
2. Try to stick with your team
3. If you put in the Gauss instead of double AC5s DO NOT BRAWL, you do not have enough DPS and with energy weps you gonna quickly boil (just a small example: with 2xAC5 you do 10 dmg each 1,5 secs, so lets say just with 2xAC5 you can core ATLAS in some lets say 25 secs = 166,6 DMG, where with Gauss you do "only" 93,75 dmg for that time this is AWESOME difference - paid with weight;) ).

EDIT: And one more thing - I can't wait for other victors, just to have speed tweak finally, because running this porker around at 87 kph, will be the best satisfaction for the poor beginnings:) Also with double basic specs and elites done, I will not be afraid of other different builds  (with lower engines it has poor turn and twist rate:(( and heat problems if you load high damage energy weps).

I've been playing with mine... even recently got the 43k EXP post basic to fully master it come the other Victor releases. I've mostly stuck with the 330XL engine and swapping a Guass + ERPPC combo with other weapons from 2 ALRM10's, 2 ASRM4's, a 2nd ERPPC, 2 ML + 2 SSRM2's.

All worked reasonably well because of the speed and mobility. I have planned a 380XL AC20 VTR-9S, so with everyone putting up fast Victors I thought I'll buy the 380XL early and test it in the Dragon Slayer. The result is a very speedy assault mech, now I play shock troop tactics where I tend to either catch an isolated target or completely flank the enemy to isolate soft rear targets. The speed and agility of the Victor allow this, and if you're careful with your aim and heat control can tie up enemy units for long periods of time. The 25pt alpha might not seem like much, but at next to no heat and pin-point targeting you can cripple and kill the majority of threats with torso core out's.

I use it as I said, in a Shock Troop role, it's always in the wrong place at the right time for my team. Like all builds though the serious LRM or PPC meta does take it's toll, but saying that I came from 1 game losing to a 4man LRM spam team, to wiping the same team out by quickly flanking and isolating their people in the next game. The larger engines really do make the Victor a beast to contend with, and whilst not able to bring large alpha's it brings high pinpoint damage for low heat to areas of the field that need the punch.

I really didn't like the DS at first, but it's been growing on me. I use a long range build because I had absolutely no success brawling with it, especially with the freakin climbing nerf.

Not good. Too little ammo and bad ammo placement.

*Scratches head* Hmmm....well if thats the sort of build you want I suppose you can try this, I optimized it based on number crunching iv done with smaller mechs. Overall the firepower is kinda low, most of it is focused on the right arm and only use the lasers sparingly on hot maps.
