This one is at least easy to understand and implement. Balancing would need some thought.

Under this plan all hardpoints have the same size, but can hold more weapons based on their size. So an Energy hardpoint could hold 1 PPC, or 2 Large Lasers, or 3 medium/small lasers. Ballistics could hold 1 AC20 or AC10, 2x UAC5 or AC5, or 3x AC2. Missiles would depend on the large, medium, small versions of each weapon.

No changes to critical slot requirements of tonnage. No overt visual changes to Mechlab, it would just adapt and indicate the weapon was attachable.

Too simple, I know. However more variation and each hardpoint has more power so fewer might be needed. Actual Sized hardpoints (assigned maximum number of criticals) would offer more control, but could also be too limiting.

I can't wait to try out my 18x medium laser Battlemaster idea, under this.

They laughed at me when they saw me stuffing double heatsinks in the arms and passing on endo-steel... then they turned a corner... and I quite literally melted their face.

They'll learn.
