Now, hear me out here....
The two lightest ballistic weapons are the AC2 and the MG.
MGs are so hilariously weapon that you'd really need to OMGWTFFFFFFF BOAT THE HELL OUT OF THEM to get any mileage out of them, and even then they'd be super short range and you'd run the risk of ammo explosions.
AC/2s are heavy enough and their damage is scattered over enough rapid fire shots that even if a mech boated then it wouldn't be a problem (we might need to add "macro" to the list of filtered words on the forum, but otherwise things should be fine).
Either way, the game gets MOAR DAKKA, and MOAR DAKKA = MORE FUN!
I for one enjoy fighting dakkamechs because it breaks up the monotony.

I could mount 3 MGs for 1.5tons (+2tons of ammo) and the next lightest ballistic option that would actually be effective was a Pair of AC/2s or an AC/10 for 12 tons.
1.5 tons straight up to 12tons.
Single AC/2s, AC/5s, and UAC/5s aren't that hot, though this might improve if the pinpoint alpha metagame is reduced in effectiveness.

I loved playing around with a 16 machine gun rack annihilator there, but they would be pretty OP in MWO when said mech can also carry a few ER PPC's to defend itself at range.
Perhaps if we get those MG racks it wouldn't be an issue with the current system? they occupied 1 crit slot, weighed 4x (2 ton) and did 4x the damage roughly. It would make regular MG's obsolete though (which was a common theme for MW4).
Dakka IS fun, I love playing with MG jagger builds even though I know they aren't as efficient as other builds. 4uac5 is also a very fun build, although you only have enough ammo to take down one maybe 2 opponents.

I run a Jager with 2 UAC5 and 4 Mg and 2 LL and anybody unlucky enough to walk in font of me is dead, its very heat efficient, (no need to alpha) holds loads of ammo and since dropping my twin guasse build i have gone form 1 to 2 kills per match(if I'm lucky) with her to 3-5 kills, loads of component destruction bonuses, letting me have any more fire power on this thing is just unfair, hey if i could put 10 Mg in the arms as per your proposal that would be 20 dps for NO HEAT and 10 tonnes +ammo Ok so i would be close range brawler, but at 70kmh that's not a problem and would leave most heavy and assaults cored in seconds

The OP is suggesting that we should allow people to use 30 Machineguns on a single Mech since it would be fun. It would also be so cheezy that I don't even need to explain the cheesiness.

You'd need plenty of ammo, and you'd need to get super close to use them!
Also there's the issue of MG spread...

30MG, 2 ERPPC. Weighs as much as Gauss + 2 PPC... 30dps close range + bursts of 20dmg...

EX: you can remove the ams to install a machine gun array.
Or one missile hard point (up to a maximum of 3). Giving you a grand total of 4 machine gun arrays. 5 if you have duel ams. Which you can match up with your ballistic hardpoints.
