ive downloaded the guide and look through the forums but i cant seem to figure out how armor distribution works.

for example why do i get a limit reached notification when i still have available armor, tonnage and slots?
is there a link which explains this in detail?

Front and back armor of the torso adds up.
So if you have a maximum of 100 points of armor to distribute and you put 80 in your front and 20 in your back, the front will show 80/100 although you are at the maximum.

Every area has a limit on it's own. e.g. the head can have an armor value of 18 maximum.
Take a look at the top of the armor-distribution

This mech (found by google search) has 94 points of 124 maximal possible, but he can only add 2 because front and back center torso are added together (+28).

There are a couple limiting factors in regards to armor.

1 ) The weight gives a hard limit for each location and thus total armor. For instance all 60 ton mechs have a max of 40 pts in each arm.
2 ) The Center, Right, and Left torsos share armor between front and back. So if the max armor for the Center Torso is 80 you could put 40 front and 40 back, or 60/20, or 50/30... etc.
3 ) Obviously, you can't add armor when the design is already at max tonnage.

Depends on the build. Long range builds tend to favor far more to the front, some even go so far as 1 armor to the rear, with 123 CT front (my RS for example).

Brawlers tend to balance it a bit. Lights who spend more time slipping in, sneaking up on someone to get in a strong hit and then running like the hitchhiker who coupled with the farmer's daughter, those guys tend to have more armor on the back than on the front.

It also depends on the mech as well. For example on Jenners the side torsos are as small as the arms, and thus the smart ones channel that armor to the back, while the CT armor is all channeled to the front. Something similar is done with Blackjacks because the left and right rear shoulders cover half of the rear CT and are proportionally larger than the front STs.
