I utilize a mouse and throttle set up. The throttle was a great investment. All required non-weapon related controls are right at my finger tips. It allows me to adjust speed, turn, jump jetti, and target R all at the same time comfortably. If one wants to take their MW:O game to the next level I highly recommand a throttle.

My lrm boat Jager I use all 5 mouse buttons

Left mouse - AC/2
Right mouse - tag
Mouse wheel button - 2 lrm 5's on chain fire (used for shots that mostly will miss, annoyance factor, or to determine enemy position via their ams)
Button 4 - dual lrm 15's together
Button 5 - Med laser for when I'm out of ammo

In most other mechs, I use left mouse button for weapons mounted on the left side of the mech, right mouse button for weapons mounted on the right side of the mech. This allows me to edge out a little past cover and fire only the weapons that have clear Los.

Lasers and Ballistics on both mouse buttons. 3rd group (keyboard) for guided weapons

Corsair M60 + Razer Nostromo. 5 groups, less when using jump jets. Typically like to separate left/right arm mounted weapons from torso mounted weapons. Most of my mechs do well with just 3-4 groups (not counting desperate alphastrike(s) on yet another group), but my founders Atlas often ends up with 1. R Arm 2. L Arm 3. CT 4. Ballistics 5. Missiles.

I find that with my current keyboard and mouse set up I can manage about 4 weapons groups. Any more than that and movement and aiming start to suffer due to button placement.

However if I had the right controller, I would probably use 6-8 groups so I could juggle them for heat efficiency.

Left, right, and center clicks on the mouse are my weapon groups. Usually main weapon(s), secondary weapon(s), other. I avoid using a 4th weapon group like the plague. For example, all of my Highlanders are right arm, right torso, streaks. My D-DC is arms, torso-cannon, streaks. I have a small number of mechs with just 2 weapon groups. And my 4X 'phract uses 3 even though I don't need them (chained 4xAC5s, 2xML, non-chained 4xAC5).

Three to four buttons on trackball, based on weapon damage, speed and body location. Weapon one is fastest fire, two is secondary attack, three being high damage groups and four being Alpha.

3-4 groups mapped on a Naga is usually what I have. Group 6 is my 'toggle group' where I put my TAG, groups 1-4 are set up based on range, cycle rate, frequency of use and/or lock requirement usually
