I have been noticing a lot of Dragon Slayers and Highlanders running 2xAC/5's as of late.

Is this honestly good and viable or poor decision making?

I have gotten good results from 2 AC/5's on my firebrand. 10 damage, fast fire-rate, no jamming, low heat and a good amount of ammo per ton. Seems solid to me.

Speaking of which, I'm starting to see a whole lot of 4 AC/2 Jagers roaming about...they even seem to be on their way to overtaking the AC/40 as the FoTM fad loadout for Jagers (despite being less effective).

Or maybe I'm just seeing them because I started assault mechs two days ago (thus low Elo).

2 ac5's in an arm are essentially a very fast firing ac10. Heavier too, of course, but twice the DPS.

10 damage at very long range every 1.5s at low heat isn't bad.

Personally, I absolutely love 2 UAC5's in the hgn-732C's arm. Double firing, its landing ac20 damage every 1.1s!

I tried the 2 UAC5 on my 733C but eventually went back putting an AC20. I am sure other people will do better with this configuration, but not for me personally. This does not mean I didn't kill plenty while I have this on my arm, which I did. Just that with AC20, I get to kill more. However I do heartily recommend this configuration for others.

Dual AC5s is something I might consider for my Dragon Slayer though. But right now I am a big Gauss fan.

The numbers of Cataphract 4X with quad AC5s appear growing. I am surprised what took this so long. This is one nasty boat with little weaknesses. It will hit far and near at very fast rates.

Another worthy configuration is the Ilya Murmomets with 3 UAC/5. Risky but when things are going its way, its killing it.

Ballistics are on the rise once again. They can take advantage of the fact that in a close fight, an energy user will be forced to shut down, and even with overrides, that's enough time for them to get killed. Jagermechs, even equipped with UAC5s and AC10s are very deadly in the battlefield. Atlas and K2s mounting UAC5s are also a big threat to face.

I think its mainly people getting bored with using PPC's/lrms so much.

4ac5 on phract or jagger is ok but its a slow mech and you need really good aim over an extended period to make it shine. Or you can just brawl with it, same as 4ac2. just because you have a range of 1800m doesnt mean you can't blast someones CT at 50m range in the time they wait to fire that 2nd PPC volley at you.

You can even fit 4uac5 on a jagger with some serious sacrifices, but only 125-150 rounds of ammo depending on how much armor your prepared to sacrifice (its still much more viable than the joke 3gauss phract build). It *will* be a scary build when we get assults capable of mounting 4 ballistics.

I've tried them but I still go back to dual AC/10s for the speed, range, damage. I like the bigger guns for that punch.

I've been running twin AC5 and twin LLs on my K2 for months. Even before the buff, twin AC5 compared well with AC20 and Gauss. At least on paper. There is something to be said for getting all your damage in one location and in one shot. But if you can keep a bead on the enemy, and evade at the same time, the higher DPS of the twin 5's is quite nice.

Double AC/5 and triple AC/2 have actually been some of the most fun and effective loadouts I've used on my DGN-5N. No kidding. And double AC/2 is far and away the best BJ-1 build I've stumbled upon.

Like Asmosis pointed out, trends don't always reflect optimal builds. With no new content being offered by PGI, a lot of people are trying to keep themselves entertained with new builds.
