The recent patch (it is July 6 2013) introduced greatly enhanced sound effects both ambient/atmospheric, engine sounds, and weapons fire.
Especially in River City the atmospheric ambient sounds are really wonderful.
It was a vast improvement, and largely still is a great improvement over what the sounds had been.
However subsequent to patch day it seems to me the reports of ballistics was overly reduced. Gone is the rich timbre of the AC2 that made it sound like a flak cannon. the AC5 too lost much of its punch. Now, the AC10, AC20, PPC and MG all sound fine. The UAC and LBX-10 are good and solid. However the AC2 and AC5 should be returned to the richness they had patch day.
Now it is true that if the player is using C3 or teamspeak the constant dakka-dakka will cause players to reduce the sound effects on the slider in options, but that is what those sliders are for, right? Don't dull the sounds of ballistics so severely for the rest of us. The quality of the game is much enhanced with AC2 and AC5 sounding like they really are putting out some destructive power.

AC/2 should, IMO, sound like a slow-fire gatling gun. If you have enough, it should be a dull (as in 'doesn't echo a lot'), metallic roar.
AC/5 should have a punch behind it like a tank cannon, while AC/10 should sound like a battleship's smaller guns. AC/20's are the main guns.
The LB-X, however, truly does sound like a mech-sized shotgun now. My only way of describing the noise is 'fractured'. It actually sounds like the mini shells are being launched.
So yeah, props for the great sounds, PGI.
