I was thinking, what if we were given the option of making our mech's nicknames public? For example, I use a Spider 5D that I called Galvantula. Instead of showing up as "Spider SDR-5D" (which is kinda redundant anyhow), it'd show up as "Galvantula SDR-5D".

I would guess that we'll be able to change mech names later at some point. When that happens I'd like to see a toggle in options to show or hide your mech names, like with founder's tags.

Considering what some people name their 'Mechs, this may backfire spectacularly.

I have to say no just for the potential to abuse it.

But considering you can give your pilot wildly inappropriate names, why would mech names be different? Just apply penalties for offensive mech names by changing all the mech names on the account to stock names with no way to change them again. Or apply the same penalty (whatever it is) that you get for calling your pilot something vile and shocking.

or simply take away the option to display them in game on an individual basis.

i voted yes on both counts and then realized my post was misleading.

Being able to see the Mech Nickname would be a great way for us to know if others that we know are within our Lance. If this was the case, it would make it easier because we know each others builds and tactical policy; this would reduce the need to explain what we are, E.G. Sniper Config etc at the beginning of each mission. The other thing that would likely happen is that MechWarrior's would form cover and fire groups within the Lance (I know we should be doing this anyway).

However, I do agree that it would be open to abuse.

My Spider 5D is currently named "The Nibbler," that'll be okay to display I hope, if we have this.

When I named my mechs the names were private, you should not get to penalize me just because you want them public now. At the very least they would need to allow us to rename our mechs (for free and not MC) before making them public.

Yup. That's why I said they should add the toggle after they allow changes.

Maybe I wasn't clear. I meant having the OPTION to show the names, not being forced to. ._.

Are you kidding? Have you SEEN the emblem editor in Call of Duty? A few months of playing that and I earned an honorary degree in Proctology... among other things.

That's image editing. The worst someone could do with their mech's name is swear at you or something.

Again, this is meant to be an OPTION, not forced.
In fact, you know what, screw it. I'm just going to edit the OP to make that more clear.

I'd be banned in around 2.75 minutes. My mech names are often... colourful - especially the cheese mech variants.

Let's see... My Awesome is called 'Painbow' - my Yagers are all variations on 'Enuf Dakka', 'Less Dakka' and the like.

The rest have names that would likely only appear on the urban dictionary, and if my nice, very traditional catholic grandmother attempted to read them she would likely organize her catholic ninja hit squat to carry out an exorcism intervention on me.

Then you'd simply choose not to make the inappropriate names public. Seriously, is it that hard to grasp the concept of optional? >_>;

Bah. I don't read OP's. I skim them as quickly as possible, cataloguing the bare minimum number of words to gain only a modest understanding of the topic. The more sensational the final product the better.

I'll then belligerently defend my opinion, even when proven wrong.

YOU AREN'T THE BOSS OF ME.

you put much more effort into your posts than many do if what you say is true.
