imo, there is only one way to steer your Mech and that is from inside the cockpit :P

I'm all for the immersiveness of a detailed cockpit view. However I'd still like a 3rd person view.

World of Tanks has spoiled me somewhat in that respect. For the uninitiated to WoT you can drive your tank in first person (first person'ish, gun scope view) or from the 3rd person view that tracks along your turret's axis. The trade off is accuracy in first person vs. awareness in 3rd. I've become a fan of watching my machine spew death from time to time. It's just fun to see.

Eh.. require a launcher, takes up a missile rack. Has only one round, and pretty much gives you a PIP that follows over a shoulder. It's nothing special, does not provide additional targeting, just a looksie.

I'll trust the devs to make good design choices on the UAV as part of the Information Warfare / Role Warfare aspects of the sim.

As for over the head / shoulder (from behind) views without the use of a (preferably destructable) UAV... No thanks. Good reasons for opposing such can be found in various other threads in this forum. Besides, that has already been settled and announced.

Launch a UAV (MIssile weapon). Now you can use 3rd person Cameras, hell, any cameras.

It's easier to fix 3rd party camera by simply not rendering anything in 3pv that cannot be seen by the mechwarrior on through his cockpit viewscreen or by the 'mech on it's sensors.

Do that, and first person view and third person view have equality in ability.

Even if you use rendering tricks to hide stuff that the pilot wouldn't see, you still cause issues.

For instance, in MW4 I could blind a pilot by firing flares at the spot where I knew the cockpit camera was located. While the flare was active, that guy couldn't see anything.

In Third person though, his camera wasn't actually in the mech, so you couldn't do stuff like that.

Which is wrong, because a mech has all kinds of sensors all over it, covering pretty much every angle possible. Mechwarriors get the vast majority of their information, including visual information, from their sensor readouts. The cockpit viewscreen is secondary.

Also, you might notice, I said "anything the MW can't see from his viewscreen or that his mech can't see with it's sensors; which means that if you did blind the 'mech's sensors and some how also blind the sight through the viewscreen ... your screen would go blank of anything other than your gauges or such.

I guess, or we could just not enable 3rd person view, since it doesn't actually add anything.

I mean, especially if you're going to truly try to restrict it to absolutely nothing beyond what you see in the cockpit, then even the viewing angle gets restricted down too.... And since you can't see your own mech, you can't see that on your screen...

So you're left with 1st person view.
