The AC/40 boats are a better comparison. High DMG, High Alpha, Pinpoint convergence. (Only thing it's missing is the range, AC/40 boats would be a terror if they had more range)

The AC40 boats have huge flaws, they aren't on the same level as PPC boats at all. You can build them on exactly two 'mechs - a CPLT and a JM6. On the Catapult you have to mount the AC20s in the torsos, so that means you move slow as crap with a standard engine. You can put an XL engine in the Jaeger but that 'mech has huge side torsos so the survivability of it is in the gutter.

Actually - the PPC is a completely unbalanced weapon within its core mechanics.

7 tons, 10 points of damage on contact, 3 critical spaces, 10 heat (I'm even bringing it back up to TT values).

Compare that to the AC10: 12 tons, 7 critical spaces, 10 points contact damage, requires ammo.

The most you could ever put on a mech is 4.

4PPCs is not hard to achieve on most heavies and assaults. But why aren't people complaining about the 4 large pulse laser boating spree? Same tonnage, fewer criticals, better damage (somewhat worse heat).... should be just as impressive, right?

Well - the mechanics of the weapon require you to track through 750 milliseconds. That gives the defending pilot half of a chance to do some damage mitigation in reaction and also means that dealing all damage to one component (or even to the mech) is somewhat rare.

Which is why the PPC reigns supreme even by comparison to autocannons.

Change the mechanics of PPC damage application - and you can bring it back into line.

Don't even need to do that the change to make is SIMPLE

7 Critical Slots for the PPC. Same as the AC 10. Done.

I agree, that's why PPCs are king currently. And also the limited range.

The people that keep screaming about nerfing PPCs obviously werent playing back in closed Beta when everybody was screaming about buffing them.

There's nothing wrong with the PPC as it is now. It's just that alot of the other weapons suck.

If they would just get all the other weapons figured out the PPC would not be everyones go to complaint.

Everyone on these forums always cry delicious tears about how LRM's are insta win button. In reality the PPC is the easiest weapon in the game to use and LRMS some of the hardest.

So far, I have had none of the problems people keep complaining about with the PPC meta. I work with my team as much as I can and kill as much as I can and I am thoroughly enjoying the game. I don't see "boating" any weapon as a problem because theres always going to be pros and cons with boating on any mech, it just takes a smart player to play on your opponents weakness.

My spider eats 3ppc/guass highlanders for breakfast.

No, just no.

People wanted the PPC buffed back in Closed Beta because it did splash damage, had a 1200m/s velocity, accumulated 10 and 13 heat (respectively), while not having HSR in play.

Back on subject, the PPC/ER PPC need to have their heat jacked back up to 10 and 15. We all agree on that. But what most people don't see to realize is that this won't do anything to the problem other then force people into shifting their builds to Large Lasers instead of PPCs. While you can torso twist beam/dot damage to spread it around, 4-6 Lrg Lasers is still a lot of damage to handle and it is more efficient, heat wise, then the current PPC meta.

So, until there is a substantial down side to heat, we're doing nothing but going from the frying pan into the fire. And yes, I totally made a heat pun there :D

And that renders a number of canon builds impossible.

It also doesn't change the fact that you're still going to carry that PPC to its limits - because it's just that much better of a weapon. The AC10 still needs ammo. Lasers still do distributed damage.

Honestly, though, the idea I suggested is quite simple.

But, there again, I was the kid who slept through class and scored the highest in the class on all the tests.

The new heat stacking penalty isan't implemented yet.

After rechecking the patch notes I discovered that I either missread or assumed that the full heat changes had gone into effect and I was wrong. Thanks for pointing out my mistake. Guess I'll need to wait to see what happens when they do.

highest dps to match
False.
Even if you are only talking dps per alpha, False. AC20 has that spot hands down. Same rate of fire.

Over ten second continuous fire, assuming you have the heat dissipation and targeting to place each shot well, AC20, UAC5, AC2, Gauss, LB10X-AC, and AC5 have higher dps.
Over 10 seconds:
AC20 48.69
UAC5 41.4
AC2 41.04
Gauss 37.25
AC10 32.91
LBX10 29.79
AC5 29.46
er ppc 24.74
ppc 24.39

That new heat stacking concept got scrapped. NGNG podcast #79 (might have been #78, I can't really remember) confirmed it. Too clunky and way too much for new players to grasp. Their first step in a new direction was the damage from 120%+ heat. Not enough but a small step in a good direction.
